Salah M. Hassan: Director and Professor of the Africana Studies and Research Center, Cornell University, will present a free public lecture on the crisis in the Sudan. The title of his lecture is: "Naming the Conflict: Darfur and the Crisis of Governance in the Sudan." Tuesday, October 23, 2007, 4:30pm, at the Africana Studies and Reseach Center, Multipurpose room.

Angela Y. Davis to visit Cornell: Angela Y. Davis, noted scholar, political activist and Professor of History of Consciousness at the University of California, Santa Cruz, will visit Cornell's campus on Tuesday, September 18, 2007 and give a free public lecture titled, "The Prison: A Sign of U.S. Democracy?" The lecture will take place at Sage Chapel (behind Day Hall), at 7:00pm. This event is co-sponsored by: The Africana Studies & Research Center, The Society for the Humanities, The Carl Becker House, United Religious Works, COSEP, Ujamaa Residential College, and the Office of the Vice Provost for Diversity and Faculty Development.

New Student Reading Project: This year marks the seventh year of Cornell's New Student Reading Project. This year's incoming undergraduate class will read The Pickup, a novel published in 2001, by South African Nobel Laurate, Nadine Gordimer. http://www.reading.cornell.edu/
