Friends of Africana Library

The Africana Library welcomes and encourages gifts in support of the building of its collection. Gifts of money, books, periodicals, equipment, and other research materials contribute to the Library's development and helps support the mission of the Library.

These gifts can be used to create named acquisition funds, as well as to enrich already-established funds. These funds are used exclusively for the purchase of new books, periodicals, electronic resources, and other items for the Africana Library’s collection. All donations to the library are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

J. Congress Mbata Book Fund

J. Congress Mbata was one of the founding members of the Africana Studies & Research Center. He played a critical role in establishing the Africana Center, in developing programs in African Studies, and in creating the first Black Studies masters degree in this country.

In his honor, an endowed book fund was established to purchase books on South Africa, especially in the areas of Congress' teaching and research, i.e. women in Africa, the history and politics of racism and segregation, and liberation movements.

John Henrik Clarke Library Fund

John Henrik Clarke (Africana Library's namesake) was instrumental in the first few years of the Africana Studies & Research Center. In the 1970s he was a Distinguished Visiting Professor of African History at the Center. He also made an invaluable contribution to the establishment of the Center's curricula. Some of the courses he helped designed, are still being taught today.

The John Henrik Clarke Library Fund was established to purchase library materials wherever needed.

Honor with Books

For each gift of $100 or more, directed to the Honor with Books Endowment, the Library will place a bookplate in one newly purchased book. The honored party will receive a letter and a copy of the bookplate in acknowledgment of your thoughtfulness.

A gift of $5000 or more establishes a named endowment which plates books in perpetuity.
