Abstract: This thesis will explore some effects of internalization of racism and sexism within the Black community. Using literary, historical and feminist works, this study will explore the issues of color prejudice and sexism as destructive forces, particularly in the lives of many African American women. Some of the nineteenth century's ideas and concepts are used as points of reference which heavily influenced or impacted belief systems, customs, and traditions for all Americans. This thesis will explore the extent to which the Black community has internalized these concepts.
