Abstract: This thesis will examine the Puerto Rican struggle against United States colonialism on the island of Puerto Rico and the United States with an emphasis on the Young Lords Organization. The Young Lords were a group of young urban activists who organized in Connecticut, Illinois, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, and New York for the purpose of improving the living conditions for Latino/a's and Blacks. In this thesis I will also examine the Young Lords fight for the liberation of all people who were oppressed, equality for women, elimination of male sexism, and oppose the actions of the military and United States imperialist activities. My primary research will be drawn from oral histories. Along with various secondary resources I will discuss how Young Lords brought to the forefront a new way of looking at Puerto Rican people and their issues.

Readings will also include texts that deal with the era of nationalist/revolutionary movements in the late 1800's and 1929, 30's, 40's, and 50's in Puerto Rico and the 1960's and 70's in the United States. These readings will provide the context in which the Young Lords Organization was formed.
