Abstract: This thesis is an analysis of the role of capitalism and racism on educational reform movements. Particular emphasis is placed on reforms advocated for by African Americans because not only must they deal with and negotiate around the capitalist imperatives of reforms; they must also deal with the racism that permeates the American educational system. By examining the educational reforms of African Americans from the 1960s to the present, the deleterious effects of capitalism and racism have on these reform efforts become apparent.
