Abstract: This is a social history of African Americans in Ithaca. It gives an account of how and why African Americans came to Ithaca and, after they settled, how they created and sustained diverse cultural institutions. One of the most notable institutions is the South Side Community Center. By closely examining the Center's evolution, decline, and giving suggestions towards its rejuvenation, one gains further knowledge of the cultural dynamics within Ithaca's African American community.
