Citation Management Committee

Mission Statement

The Cornell University Library Citation Management Committee, formerly the Citation Management Working Group or CMWG (formerly Bibliographic Database Management group) is a subcommittee of PSEC's Reference & Outreach Committee.

CMWG promotes and educates the Cornell community about citation management software by providing documentation and training in the use of citation management products to CUL public services staff as well as to Cornell faculty, staff, and students and works with vendors to improve citation management services and products. Current members of the group are representative of IRIS, Mann, Engineering, Vet, Medical, and ILR libraries, CIT, and the Knight Writing Program. CMWG maintains a list, CiteManage-L, for feedback, reporting problems, and getting help with EndNote and RefWorks.

Overview and History

In 1998, Bob Kibbee created an interest group of librarians interested in personal bibliographic and citation management. They eventually assumed the name BDM and came under the IRPC umbrella. In 2001, the BDM spearheaded an unsuccessful attempt to get a site license for EndNote. In 2003, the BDM decided that RefWorks, a competing citation management system distributed by CSA offered many advantages over EndNote. RefWorks has comparable features, but is web based. Users can access and add to their citation databases from computers at the library, in their offices, in their dorm rooms, while at home on vacation, or when traveling anywhere in the world. In December 2004, the CMWG obtained joint funding from CIT and DRC for a campus site license for RefWorks.   In 2006, CMWG became a committee under Reference and Outreach Committee.
