British and British Commonwealth History
This policy covers collection development for the history of Great Britain and Ireland; Commonwealth countries of Canada, Australia, and New Zealand; and Oceania. Overall, the British collections are relatively strong, while coverage of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Oceania is selective and represents major trends and areas. Primary Users: The primary clientele are the faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students in the History Department. Other users will have a range of departmental affiliations, including English, Anthropology, and City and Regional Planning, to name a few. Existing Collection Strength:

Oceania CCI 3; LANGUAGE W Collections for Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland) and the Irish Republic cover all historic time periods to the present, including historic archaeology and Medieval Studies (relevant general materials are covered by the Medieval Studies selector, the Classics and Ancient History selector, and General History selector). Particular collection strengths include the Tudor Stuart Period (including the English Civil War), the Eighteenth Century, and the Nineteenth Century. British naval history, the building of the empire, and the First and Second World Wars are included. For Irish history the uprisings of the early Twentieth Century are important. Regional and shire history is collected, as are local histories of major cities are included. All major historical journals are collected as well as many shire-level local historical publications. Existing collections include many large microform sets and specialized digital resources. Collections for Canada cover all time periods from European colonization to the present. National and regional history is collected; local history is collected for major cities. The history of First Nations peoples is included. Major history journals are collected, as are some provincial-level historical journals. Materials in both French and English are included. Collections for Australia and New Zealand cover all periods from European colonization to the present. National and regional histories are included; local history is collected for major cities. The history of aboriginal peoples is included. Historical journals of national coverage are included, as are some regional historical publications. Collections for Oceania include basic histories of the area from European colonization to the present. Major journals covering the region are included. Subjects Covered: Library of Congress classes DA, DU, and F 1001-1140 Geographical source of publications: The collection includes imprints in English and other Western European languages, originating (in general) from North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand, or Oceania. There is no limitation on the geographical location of imprints. Key vendors: This collection is developed from the full range of general, international, forms plans, specialized vendor lists (particularly important for Oceania), Internet current awareness services, and book approval plans with Kennys Bookshop (Irish imprints) and Blackwell's (British history). Exclusions include the following formats/audiences: juvenile literature, textbooks, genealogy, manuscripts and archives, rare books, newspapers. South African history is collected by the African Studies selector. South Asian history is collected by the South Asian Studies selector. Materials relevant to the study of indigenous languages and peoples may also be collected by the Linguistics selector and the Anthropology selector.
