Policy on Duplication of Library MaterialsCornell University Library does not subscribe to, order, accept, or retain exact duplicates of books, journals (serials), or back runs of journals without justification as to the a) usefulness of multiple copies to current Cornell research and teaching needs and/or b) historical importance owing to textual variants or unique physical characteristics (e.g. provenance, binding, annotations). This policy also needs to be taken into account in reviews of existing duplication in the collection.
Exemptions to this policy might include:
- Titles that are in demand, such as selected New & Noteworthy titles, New Student Reading Project, Reference Materials
- Select titles by Cornell University faculty
- Key reference titles that are not (or not yet) available online,(e.g. Chicago Manual of Style, some language dictionaries, etc.)
- Titles that are frequently placed on course reserve
- Selected Rare or Archival materials (e.g. Cornell theses, signed or variant editions)
- Duplication by a library located on a geographically separate campus (ie Geneva, NYC)
