TUNIS, Tunisia


SHORT HISTORY: Acquired by the Turks in 1574, Tunis was under the rule of hereditary Governors titled Beys who established practical independance under the Muradid dynasty (1628-1705) and the following Husainid dynasty. The Turkish suzerainety was replaced in 1881 by a French protectorate and by full independance in 1956. The monarchy was abolished by the present Republic of Tunisia in 1957.
