Present: Patricia O'Neill (chairperson), Jill Powell, Michael Engle, Carmen Blankinship, Nancy Skipper, Beth Fontana, Patrick Stevens, Suzanne Whitaker, Martha Walker, Susan Barnes
NEW MEMBERS: New members were introduced. Beth Fontana from Library External Relations will assist in implementing the new CUL logo and will help facilitate the development of logo images for individual libraries. Patrick Stevens, the Icelandic Curator, will be involved with various web sites currently under development in the Rare and Manuscripts Division. Suzanne Whitaker is the director of the Veterinary Library. Martha Walker, from the OKU Reference Services Division, has a background in graphic design and is currently in charge of signs, public handouts and the newsletter, "Cite & Byte." New members were advised to send their e-mail addresses to Susan Barnes who is in charge of our listserv.
OUTSTANDING BUSINESS: The ILS web form, which was put on hold last semester, is next on the list of forms to be reviewed by the committee. Nancy Skipper, Carmen Blankinship, Tony Cosgrave, Susan Currie and Rick Lightbody will be meeting Friday, January 17, to discuss details and go over some of the changes suggested by the design committee last October 14. Susan Barnes is still working on getting an up-to-date list of members of all the various WWW Implementation Committees to Michael for our web page.
LOGOS: Beth Fontana updated the committee on the status of the new CUL logo. The tower image, which is an "impressionistic" rendering of the Uris clock tower, can be replaced by other images selected by the unit libraries for their own publications. Catherine Murray-Rust's office is providing the funding. Beth will coordinate the development and approval of these images with Catherine and Media Services. Media Services staff are working on producing the logo in electronic form so that it can be clearly reproduced for handouts, newsletters, stationary, etc. They are also working on a color version for the web. Tony, Beth and Patricia will meet with the designer, Laurie Ray, to discuss technical requirements for web images as well as the design challenge, in the web environment, of replacing a horizontal banner with a more vertical box. The committee's design guidelines will be altered to reflect the integration of the new logo designs into CUL web pages. Images on navigation buttons may also be redesigned to harmonize with the new logos.
GUIDELINES: In accordance with Jill Powell's suggestion, the guidelines will be changed to de-emphasize using the globe icon to indicate electronic sources with open access. This will be a recommendation instead of a requirement because some web pages will look too cluttered otherwise. The requirement of using an icon to indicate Cornell-access-only will remain. The committee might request assistance with redesigning the access icons.
ENGINEERING WEB SITE: Even though the Engineering Library's web site will remain on their own server, Jill requested that the design committee provide a review of the pages. Since Jill was present at the meeting, and has been an active participant on the committee, she took her own notes on the suggestions made by the committee. Jill already took the initiative to view the web site through Lynx so other committee members will not need to do this. One of the main suggestions made by the committee is to consider using the footer navigational bar on the home page. The committee also requested that copyright granting information be embedded in the source code, or the note "not copyrighted". Jill noted several other minor suggestions which were made. In general, the committee was very impressed with the range and clarity of Engineering's web site.
MISC.: Michael Engle will send out an e-mail reminding webmasters to check all links to the library server to make sure they have the correct address. Susan Barnes suggested that we post future agendas, in addition to the minutes on the committee's web page. Since she made such a good suggestion, she was asked to do the posting.
NEXT MEETING: The committee will meet next week only if the ILR web site is ready for review or if there is substantial business pertaining to the logos or the ILS request form. [NOTE: The meeting was subsequently canceled.]
LIBRARY SERVER: Patricia learned that it is possible with the new server software to set up a test area in the library server for pages that we do not want the public to access. Access would be controlled by i.p. address. A brief discussion ensued about the value of this for the Design Committee. Michael suggested that it would be useful for reviewing web sites from libraries that do not have their own server software. It was suggested that the Instruction and Reference Program Committee would also be interested in web pages with limited access. Patricia agreed to consider how to pursue this issue. She will be meeting with Implementation Committee.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Skipper
