CUL Web Design Committee
Meeting 12/3/96

Minutes

Attending: Patricia O'Neill (chair), Michael Engle, Jill Powell, Nancy Skipper, Meryl White (recorder)

Patricia asked Michael to point to the icons on the Math Library site from the icons section of the Guidelines document. This way other library web masters will have an easy source for locating library-related icons.

Patricia also asked Michael to add a list of Design Committee members to our web site and a list of sites that we have already reviewed.

Patricia told us that we have a new member, Elizabeth Fontana, from Library Public Affairs. Patricia is going to meet with Elizabeth to go over design elements for the library logos. Some issues we are concerned about are: gif size, and the resulting tradeoff between resolution and speed of load, if the logo was too detailed whether or not the details would translate well to a web browser, if the shape of the logo is square, whether we would be able to still have a page layout that looked good, whether the footer buttons would need to be changed or just their outer frame colors, and what colors libraries would be able to employ in their logo.

In the next meeting on December 17, Laurie Ray, from Media Services, will join us along with unit heads and library web masters, to talk about how libraries are going to incorporate the the new library logo into their web sites and what to think about for developing their own logos.

We are considering moving our meeting to 10:30 on Mondays next semester.

Katherine Reagan, from Rare & Manuscripts, let us know that they have formed a Rare & Manuscripts Web Review committee and that they will be working to develop their site. They will be ready for review late in the Spring semester.

Constance Finlay, from the ILR Library, said that the ILR Library web site will be ready for revew in January. She also said that they are using NetCloak. This is a piece of software that looks at a user's IP address to determine what sites it can get into. Patricia said that she would follow up on working with Bill Turner on this issue so that we can use an IP filter for staff links.

We looked at Tony's re-organization of the Library WWW Servers page. We liked the sections. We suggest making the words following CISER not a link as is done for the ILR Library. Also, we wondered if the ILR Library would consider being listed that way and putting Catherwood in parentheses afterward, as is done on the Individual Libraries page, reachable from the CUinfo homepage.

We looked at the Literature page. Michael will speak with Fred about making minor changes to comply with the requirements in the Guidelines. One change is to list a URL on the homepage. This is not stated specifically in the Guidelines for Divisions, only for Units, so we asked Michael to take the word "unit" out of that requirement. We liked the use of the images, but we were concerned about copyright. We thought we should add a statement to the Guidelines saying something like if an image is copyrighted, there should be a permission granted statement somehow related to the image, either through a link or a note. Michael will also speak with Fred about copyright issues.
