CUL Web Design Committee
Meeting 3/19/96

Minutes

Attending: Patricia O'Neill (chair), Susan Barnes (recorder), Lenore Coral, Michael Engle, Michelle Paolillo, Barbara Prior, Nancy Skipper, Meryl White, Charles Wivell

Patricia announced that she and Tony are looking for a graphics designer to help with CUL pages. They're speaking to Media Services and University Publications.

Patricia also gave some informational, non-Design-Subcommittee updates: The acquisition request form on the CUL home page will be directed to Olin Library Collection Development. A suggestion has been made of directing users to individual libraries renewal/recall forms rather than having a link at the CUL level. This would eliminate the need for a select a library option on the form, which has created some difficulties in the design of said form.

Nancy had some comments about issues in page design which should be kept in mind for the visually impaired, and some other issues. She'll send these to design-l.

The group agreed to conduct more discussion regarding ALT tags and color issues next week. Also, detailed discussion regarding the glossary was postponed until the next meeting. We should send suggestions and comments regarding the glossary to design-l between now and then.

The remainder of the meeting was spent discussion the new Physical Sciences Home Page, which meets the design subcommittee's draft guidelines. The discussion brought to light some issues to discuss and clarify. Succeeding discussions about library home pages will likely be less detailed as time goes on, we learn more, and the guidelines are firmed up. Eventually we may be able to conduct discussions about library home pages entirely via design-l; for now, the group agreed that it is very useful to conduct these discussions together.

Next meeting will be 4/2, 10:30, Olin 106.

Our assignments before then: --take a look at the Music Library home page (http://www.library.cornell.edu/design/music/musiclib.html),

--look at the glossary for the draft design document (http://urislib.library.cornell.edu/dsigngloss.html).
