Minutes
Attending: Michael Engle (acting chair), Susan Barnes (recorder), Barbara Berger, Tony Cosgrave, Barbara Prior, Meryl White.
The group looked at the Department of Preservation and Conservation Web site with Barbara Berger. In all it is a really nice page. There were a few minor adjustments to suggest, mainly in the head and footer areas. This page was interestingly different from previous units' pages because it is designed to serve as a statewide and national resource for preservation and conservation specialists. As such, it contains schedules, registration forms, and manuals containing instructions and techniques.
The group discussed briefly whether the CUL server could be an ftp server for rather long documents. Examples are the manual guides which the Department of Preservation and Conservation wishes to deliver to its clientele via the net. Tony stated there should be no problem, since is it presently possible to ftp to and from the CUL server. Barbara will begin using html as a way to present the manual guides and will post a form to do a user survey to see whether additional formats (such as pdf) would be desirable.
Barbara B. raised the question of how Web site managers can get access to the use data for their files from the log of the library Web server. The committee agreed that the feedback on which files are used, by whom, and when is very important for the ongoing design of Web sites, recognizing errors and bad links in sites, and compiling data for grant applications and professional publications. Michael will contact Paul Constantine about this.
As usual, several needed revisions to the design document emerged as a result of the discussion (most particularly the fact that we should make correct spelling a requirement rather than a recommendation). Next time the committee will look at the CTS home page. The next meeting will be 6/4/96 in Olin 106 at 10:30am. (The committee meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month.)
