CUL Web Design Committee
Meeting 7/2/96

Minutes

Attending: Patricia O'Neill (chair), Tony Cosgrave, Michael Engle, Barbara Prior, Nancy Skipper, Meryl White (recorder)

We discussed the issue of typography that Nancy brought up on design-l. She would like to incude in the recommendations that designers *provide visual contrast between blocks of text and surrounding blank space, and *use graphics sparingly to enhance the content of a document. She will re-write that section and forward it to Michael to post in the Guidelines.

We discussed who will attend the pilot class offered by CIT on Advanced Web topics, including Image Maps: from Pictures to Links, Tables, Using Forms to Your Advantage, and Frames. The class will run on July 30 from 8-4:30 in G25 Stimson Hall. There are still openings, if you would like to attend, please contact Lynn Brown (lcb1@cornell.edu).

We looked at the renewal form that Tony developed at http://urisref.library.cornell.edu/cul/newcul/renewal.htm. We noted that a definition of renewal is needed, and auggested a link to something that says "what is a renewal?" Tony said that each library will customize the form, and include a policy statement, above the second red line. On the bar codes, the group suggested a line that says "this is what a barcode looks like." We discussed what the scripted responses will be if a user forgets to put in a piece of critical information, such as e-mail address. We then discussed where to leave the user after he or she fills out the form. We would like to use a standard button bar if possible. If this is not possible, we would like users to have 4 options, renew more books at this library, renew books at other libraries, CUL homepage, Individual Library homepage. We did not know if we would need to write a script to change the footer option. There are not many library staff who can write scripts. This may be something LTD could handle. Patricia can talk to Paul and Catherine about the need for script writing, and possibly we will be able to forward these kinds of requests to LTD. Tony will talk with Ben Trelease about the kinds of footers we are interested in to see if scripting is required.

We then looked at the recall form that Tony developed at http://urisref.library.cornell.edu/cul/newcul/recall.htm. Patricia suggested that each form accommodate 2 recalls, side by side. The wording would need to be changed to read "for more items, please submit additional forms." We discussed where to leave the user when a recall form is submitted. We would like to offer the user the option to submit more recalls, submit a recall to another library, got to the CUL homepage, go to the Forms & Feedback page, or go to the Individual Library's homepage.

The forms we need to review for next time are the Reference Forms and the Suggestions for Purchase Form, followed by the ILS form.

In the Design Gudelines, Michael will move the Web Site Recommendations that specify to check the pages in Lynx with special attention for forms and tables (E 1 and 2) to Required. Under the Forms section, Patricia will provide Michael with a paragraph on "form basics" to include such things as we are working on the scripted responses, but they should use standard terminology, there should be no dead-ins, the response pages must meet standard criteria, and the forms should be simple, and viewable in lynx.

Michael will provide links to "Forms to review" section of the" CUL Web Pages/Forms/Images for committee review" section of the Web Implementation Committee's Home Page, http://www.library.cornell.edu/design/design.html as follows: Generic CUL renewal and recall forms from Tony Cosgrave, Sample Fine Arts implementation of renewal form from Barbara Prior, Africana forms, Five circulation forms from proposed OKU site written by Keith Jenkins.

This will be our last meeting until the second Tuesday in September. Barbara Prior will serve as Acting Chair, and will call a meeting in August if needed.
