Summary

Loaner laptop support can be grouped into three general categories of activities:

  1. Circulation activities.
  2. Process repairs.
  3. Create and maintain laptop software.

The particulars on each of these activities are further detailed below. Units who choose to offer loaner laptops are expected to resource appropriately the first two sections to ensure the success of this supplemental service. Desktop Services (DS) is working to secure staffing resources to be able to provide the third service, as long as a homogenous"image" meets a unit's needs. (Thanks, IRIS-TST, for currently doing this for Uris Library, and soon FAL!) Units desiring unique software or configurations may take on this responsibility only if appropriate resources are committed.

Activity and responsibility details

Activity details and some ideas to increase efficiencies and effectiveness.

1) Circulation activities

General activities: Related ideas
Arrange space, deal with signage within the unit and on the laptop. Circ. staff in IRIS and EMPSL work together to standardize procedures to the degree efficient processes can be established.

2) Process damaged laptops.

General activities: Related ideas
Call or email Dell to arrange laptop repair. Track requests for service and repairs. Circ. staff in IRIS and EMPSL work together to standardize procedures to the degree efficient processes can be established.

3) Create and maintain the OS and applications.

General activities: Related ideas
Maintain OS patches.
Keep applications current.
Configure intelligently for optimal patron utility.

Desktop Services is working to secure resource to offer the creation and maintainance of OS and applications that are appropriate to all units, but will be identical (homogenous) between the units. In the meantime, IRIS TST is leading this effort.

Units may elect to manage their own images, if appropriate resources are committed.

Notes:

As of Fall '04, all these loaner laptops are new and identical to each other.
