Documentation Committee Meeting
March 3, 2006

Present: Camille Andrews, Gaby Castro Gessner, Ken Bolton, Gail Steinhart, Amy Blumenthal, Carmen Blankinship
Minutes: Gail Steinhart

Announcements

·        Gail: “Get It Cornell” will be implemented over spring break. Right now the help page consequences should be primarily cosmetic – replacing “Find it at Cornell” with “Get It Cornell.”

·        Camille - Quick Guide update: The updates to print versions of the quick guides have also been made to the help page versions.

·        Camille - Chinese/Japanese/Korean (CJK) searching: Beth Katzoff will be making a handout for staff on this.

·        Camille – Find Images: Camille met with Lance on this. The Find Images group is writing their own help. They will supply us with something very brief for the Gateway help pages, and we’ll link to their more comprehensive help.

·        Gaby – The Librarians’ Internet Index (LII, http://lii.org/) was suggested as an addition for the Human-selected sections of the Web and Search Engines page. Camille will make the change.

·        Gaby – raised the issue of whether we should add information on theses and dissertations in DSpace to the “Locating Dissertations” page. Camille will also do.

·        Camille – now that the journal abbreviation search (JABBR) was been integrated into the OPAC, we need to update references to journal abbreviations in the help pages. Camille will do.

Standardized help format and guidelines

We discussed whether any changes or standardization are needed with respect to how other working groups submit help documentation, or request documentation. We agreed that the current structure works reasonably well.

CU Medical – changes regarding access for special categories of users

The cross-campus access group has created a new interim screen that gives users a way to login if they have legitimate access to CUL resources. Camille will update help pages accordingly.

We tabled further discussion of changes and updates to the permit administration process until a future meeting.

Book delivery and annex services changes

Ken has updated related help pages as needed.

Technical support help pages

Ken will talk with Maureen about making info on the Gateway and in the help pages consistent.

Help page re-design

Still in progress.

Amy is reviewing and updating technical help pages in Gateway help. Specifically, some problem resources now work fine, some new problem resources have come up, and references to specific browsers will be made more generic.
