Documentation Committee Meeting Minutes
Thursday 1/31 - 361 Mann Library
Attendance: Kornelia Tancheva, Mary Patterson, Lee LaFleur, Mihoko Hosoi

New appointments update
The Documentation Committee is currently waiting for the appointment of two new members to replace Angela Horne and Leah Solla. Members of IRPC Steering are working to identify potential candidates. Kornelia Tancheva will serve as the new Co-Chair, and the Committee will need to assign a new Print Documentation Coordinator to take over for Leah. The Committee also discussed the appointment of new coordinators, one to serve as primary editor for the Research Strategy Tutorial and one to work on creating/identifying existing help pages on finding different types of library materials. Mihoko Hosoi agreed to work on the latter, and Kornelia agreed to contact Michael Engle (the creator of the original tutorial) and to begin looking at the best strategies for maintaining the Help version.

Review of pages
We reviewed the latest batch of new pages on the gateway help site. In conducting the review the Committee noticed that a number of the pages had not been indexed for the Help Search. The Committee also noted that the Help page copyright notices need to be updated for 2002. Lee will attend to these issues in addition to requesting to have the "Email Notification" link removed from the Help TOC page. The Committee also discussed the Finding Books page at http://gould.mannlib.cornell.edu/newhelp/res_strategy/finding/books.html
and agreed to remove the link to the existing Finding Call numbers page and to and keep the more current LC Classification Outline link. The Committee also decided to replace the commercial About.com "Understanding Call Numbers" link, with an in-house or non-proprietary page, in the meantime the page will be removed. Mary Patterson and Kornelia will look into existing substitutes for this page. Mihoko has agreed to work on such a page, should that be necessary.

Canned search help
The Committee discussed the idea for a "Canned Search Help" page, as suggested by the OPAC Committee. There were questions as to where in OPAC/Gateway Help this page would go. Kornelia and Lee will bring this issue up at the next OPAC Committee meeting and ask for suggestions.

Cookies
The Committee discussed the wording on Help pages relating to the use of Cookies for gateway databases. Currently the wording on most of these pages does not clearly indicate that cookies must be enabled in order to use many of these resources. Kornelia has agreed to look into this issue and adjust the wording on these pages.

Publicity.
The Committee agreed that messages announcing significant changes to Gateway help should be regularly sent to IRPC-L in addition to the Committee's Meeting Minutes

MyContents
Lee announced that help pages for the MyContents service are currently in development by that group. Angela has sent a page for the Committee to review, and Lee will forward it to the rest of the Committee.

Next Meeting; Thursday February 28, 2002 10:30-12:00 pm Mann 361
