Call Number/Location Guide

Where Is the Library?

The Fine Arts Library is housed on the 3rd floor of Rand Hall. It is accessible via stairs and elevator just inside the front entrance of the building, on the ground floor.

The circulation, reserve, equipment, and reference service areas are all availalbe at the front desk, to the left of the library entrance. Computers, printers, and photocopiers are located across from the front desk, while seating is available along the North wall. Laptops, flash drives, and headphones are also available at the circulation desk.

Call Numbers:

Cornell University follows the Library of Congress Call Number system. Each book is catalogued and given a call number based on several factors, which include the subject matter and author. All books in the library are shelved by call number.

Call numbers are arranged from A to Z moving toward the East wall (back into the stacks). Periodicals are shelved by their call number in most cases. For a partial explanation of the meanings of call number designations, see:

Books which are designated as Flats, Oversize, Reference and Reserve are separated from the regular collection and housed in special locations. A search in the Cornell Library Catalog should note these special areas as part of the call number. Maps are also posted in the library, or you can ask the Reference or Circulation desk for directional assistance.

Other Library Resources:

Videos and DVDs - Please ask at circulation desk. Videos can be viewed on site without being charged out, or can circulate for three days.
