2. Library Instruction Idea Exchange

Date: Tuesday, March 1st from 9:00 am - 10:30 in 106 Olin.

Topic: To bring together library staff to share ideas and approaches to teaching in an informal discussion setting. Refreshments will be served. This forum will focus on registration. What are we currently using to keep track of workshops registrations? What are the strengths and weakness of our current systems? Several different systems will be demonstrated. Please feel free to come prepared to show your library's system if you like. We will also consider what the ideal registration system would look like.

Program to date: Kornelia will demonstrate Mann's registration system, Tony will demonstrate CIT's database registration system and the new Web Forms registration system, Thad will demonstrate the Statler Wire registration system.

Marcy Rosenkrantz and Paul Houle of Library Systems are invited to attend the workshop. Hopefully an outcome of this exchange is to brainstorm a library - wide registration system.

Virginia reported that it was difficult to contact other Universities to inquire of their existing registration systems.

Action: Tony to send message to IRPC to remind them of this event.
Action: Thad to contact UC Berkeley.
Action: Tony to get contact name at Columbia University and Virginia to contact.

3. Information Fluency Implementation

The Cornell University Library is reviewing the Priority Objectives for 2005-2006.

Priority #3 is:

"Work with faculty and librarians to develop strategies to incorporate information fluency competencies into the curriculum at all levels.

Working with faculty and other partners, define information fluency learning objectives for incorporation into the curriculum. Assess the effectiveness of the Library’s instructional program and enhance the program as needed to ensure that these learning objectives are being met. E emphasize the role of librarians as consultants and participants in the instructional and research programs of the university by contributing to the educational mission of the university through partnerships with faculty and students."

Kornelia gave an update in that the committee has been reviewing their charge and they have altered some wording in the priority.

4. Future of the Instruction Working Group

The group discussed its upcoming projects after the retreat in March.

There was a discussion of the relationships between IWG and the Strategic Priority Implementation Team. We agreed that the two groups should work closely together.

Other projects for the IWG: the Idea Exchange forums. A suggestion for the next Library Instruction Idea Exchange for April was a follow up to the retreat, and a discussion of assessment. May's Idea Exchange was the latest active learning techniques.Other suggestions for further forums include: instruction statistics, staff training, and services for instructors.

A suggestion was made for the Instruction Working Group to offer some services similar to what the Center for Learning and Teaching currently offers. These may include: coaching, critique of instruction styles, working with David Way from CTL. We decided to continue this discussion at our next meeting.

5. Regular Meeting Time

Jill has a conflict with the Thursday 1-2:30 pm time, so we looked at alternatives. Two times were suggested: Wednesday from 11-12:00 pm or Friday from 10-11:00 am. Friday seemed better.

Action: Kornelia will check with Jill and schedule regular meetings on Fridays if that is acceptable to everyone.

Next Meeting: To Be Announced
