Kudos
Stuart Basefsky, senior reference librarian at ILR, has
won the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Librarianship. His
exceptional twenty-five-year career as a librarian has been characterized by
innovation, a broad vision, high energy, remarkable skills as a negotiator,
and a commitment to quality service to users second to none. His experience
as a teacher, his creative approach to providing information services both
within and outside Cornell, and his leadership role in helping the ILR school
advance its international agenda were key factors in securing this award.
The Special Libraries Association’s Upstate New York Chapter (UNYSLA)
has selected Angela Horne as its 2005 Chapter Member award
winner. Angela is the assistant director and head of Public Services at the
Management Library and has been a member of the Special Libraries Association
(SLA) since 2000. The UNYSLA Chapter Member award is bestowed annually on an
individual who has shown distinguished service to the chapter through outstanding
achievements and contributions.
Sasha Skenderija, the research technology coordinator in the Law Library,
was recently accepted into the prestigious Fulbright Senior Specialists Program
in library science. He has been invited to deliver the keynote lecture
at CASLIN 2005 International Seminar in Prague in June and to serve as a consultant
with the Czech State Tech Library, due to its planned transformation into the
National Tech Library—an academic network of the Czech scientific research
libraries. This is a great honor for him and for CUL.
Elaine Westbrooks (metadata librarian, Mann Library) was
recently awarded the 2005 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Librarianship.
Candidates for the award are evaluated on “their skill in librarianship,
their service to the college and to the profession and their scholarship and
continuing professional growth.” As her supervisor, Bill Kara, says: “In
all these areas Elaine has certainly excelled. Elaine has firmly established
herself as a leader in metadata applications and the development of digital
collections and services. Within the library system she has been a leader of
the Metadata Working Group; within her profession she is a recognized expert
in the field of geospatial metadata. Not every librarian edits two books in
one year, but in 2004 the American Library Association published Metadata
in Practice: Building the Diverse Digital Library (co-edited with Diane
Hillmann), and Scholarly Resources, Inc., will soon publish Elaine’s
book, Black Studies and Culture on the WWW: A Guide to the Very Best Websites. In
addition, Elaine and Keith Jenkins are now editing a festschrift
honoring Tom Turner.”
A different kind of kudo: Fred Muratori (IRIS) wins the prize
for “Best Assessed.” For his presentation to a first-year writing
seminar, Environmental Theory and Politics, Fred received a card signed by
grateful students.
