CUL and Reunion

Elizabeth Fontana

Cornell’s annual alumni reunion weekend is scheduled for June 9-12 this year. CUL has traditionally offered more special programs than any other campus unit, and this year is no exception. From tours and open houses, to workshops on electronic genealogy and preserving home libraries, to exhibits and lectures, CUL will host eighteen programs for alumni and their families.

Highlights of the weekend include:

“An Unlikely Story: The Joyce Collection at Cornell”
M. H. Abrams, Class of 1916 Professor Emeritus of English, will offer a lecture about how the library acquired its exceptional James Joyce collection. Thursday, June 9, 4:30 p.m., Hollis Cornell Auditorium, Goldwin Smith Hall. (An opening reception for RMC’s summer exhibition, From Dublin to Ithaca: Cornell’s James Joyce Collection, follows at 5:30 p.m. in the Hirshland Gallery, Kroch Library.)

Electronic Genealogy: Finding Your Ancestors in Cyberspace
Olin/Uris reference librarians will introduce basic tools and concepts for online genealogical research. Alumni will get hands-on practice in using the many electronic resources available on the Web and here at Cornell. Friday, June 10, 9:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.; Saturday, June 11, 1:30 p.m., Uris Library Electronic Classroom.

Family Treasures: Preserving Your Home Library
Staff from Preservation and Collection Maintenance will show alumni how to preserve letters, documents, photographs, books, or other mementos. Friday, June 10, 10:00 a.m., 2B48 Kroch Library.

Mushroom Alumni: Remarkable Fungi and Their Return to China
Mycology professor Kathie Hodge will relate a story of botanical intrigue, explaining how a remarkable collection of Asian fungi was sent to Cornell in the 1930s for safekeeping. Following her talk, plant pathology photographer Kent Loeffler will offer remarks on his concurrent exhibition of fungi photographs on display at Mann Library. Friday, June 10, 10:00 a.m., second floor, Mann Library.

Tours and Open Houses
The Catherwood, Engineering, Fine Arts, Music and Dance, and Mathematics libraries, as well as CL3 in Uris, are all hosting open houses for alumni. Curators in the Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections will also showcase treasures from the special collections, and library conservators will offer a tour of the preservation facilities in Olin Library.
