EventsPSEC’s next Public Services Forum will take place on Monday, February 27, from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. in the Kroch Lecture Room. It will be in a debate format focusing on the topic of the next-generation gateway as a precursor to establishing a task force to consider taking steps in this direction. Peter Hirtle and Kornelia Tancheva will debate the issue: “Resolved, CUL should begin now to plan the next-generation gateway to serve as a portal to scholarly information resources for the Cornell community.” Caffeine will be provided to stimulate the discussion.
Kurt A. Jordan will open the series with a lecture,“Recent Developments in the Archaeology of North American Indians.” Jordan is an assistant professor of anthropology and American Indian studies at Cornell whose research focuses on the archaeology and history of eighteenth-century Seneca Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) communities. The talk will emphasize three issues in the archaeology of North American Indians where major changes have taken place in recent years: (1) ideas about the first occupations of North America, (2) evidence for the introduction of domesticated plants and agriculture in the Northeast, and (3) research practices that increasingly involve consultation and collaboration with present-day Native communities who are the descendants of the peoples being investigated. Sharon Burch, a Navajo folksinger and songwriter, will give a musical performance on March 3. Audra Simpson, an assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology and the American Indian Program, will lecture on “Captivating Eunice: Membership, Colonialism, and the Problem of Incorporation Today” on March 15.
