Kirsten Hensley, the Physical Sciences Library access services coordinator, was the 2005 recipient of the New York Library Association Dewey Scholarship from Syracuse University.  Kirsten is enrolled in the School of Information Studies M.S. in Library and Information Science Program.

Janet McCue, the director of Mann Library and the Associate University Librarian for life sciences, was selected for the 2006 Frye Leadership Institute.  The Frye Institute program is aimed at individuals who have a keen interest in issues of information management on campuses and a commitment to serve in leadership positions.  This year only 18% of the applicants nominated by their institutions were selected, and the committee based its selection on three criteria: the applicant’s leadership qualities, the applicant’s statement of purpose, and the applicant’s proposed practicum project.  Applicants were asked to describe a year-long project that they would undertake after the two-week residential portion of the Frye Institute.  Although nearly every participant modifies or changes completely the proposal by the end of the two weeks, the selection committee looks for evidence of innovation and collaborative work in the proposal.  Janet’s proposal grew out of her work with an NSF planning grant.  The research project focused on developing a conceptual model for library-laboratory collaboration to address the problems of research data preservation and discovery.  In participating in the Frye Institute, Janet hopes to explore the role of the library in providing access and archival support for research data and the steps that will be needed to make that happen.

Jill Powell, an engineering reference librarian and the instruction coordinator, presented the EngrG 150 sessions “Engineering Information Competencies” and “Create Your Own Web Page Using Dreamweaver.”  She also conducted a library research session for the CEE structural Engineering grad student lunch group in October.  In September, Jill attended the Western New York/Ontario Association of College and Research Libraries Fall Conference in East Aurora, NY.

Leah Solla, the chemistry librarian, attended the American Chemical Society Program Planning & Coordinating Conference in Baltimore and a Chemical Abstracts Advisory Committee meeting in Columbus.  In October she coordinated Cornell outreach activities for the National Chemistry Week Chemistry Fair at Pyramid Mall.
