Phil Davis and Michael Fromerth made the news in the March 23 issue of Library Journal Academic Newswire in an article titled “Preprints, Citations, Downloads and Open Access: Paper Suggests a Complex Relationship.” Investigating a selection of mathematics journals in the arXiv, they determined that, first, the articles in arXiv get more citations than non-deposited articles and, second, they are associated with fewer downloads from publishers’ sites. But by conducting further analysis, they came to the conclusion that open access has not been the only cause of increased citations. Their findings have caused vigorous discussion.
