Kristine M. Alpi, the associate director of the Weil Cornell Medical Library, recently had a paper published: “Mapping the Literature of Emergency Nursing,” Journal of the Medical Library Association, 2006 April; 94(2 Suppl): E107E113.

Adam Chandler and Jim LeBlanc, of Library Technical Services, have the lead article in this month’s issue of Library Resources & Technical Services, the journal of the ALA Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS): “Exploring the Potential of a Virtual Undergraduate Library Collection Based on the Hierarchical Interface to LC Classification,” July 2006; 50(3): 157-163.

Erla Heyns, the director of the Veterinary Library; Terry Kristensen, the associate director; and Michael Friedman, the outreach services associate, attended a workshop, Emotional Intelligence: Using It to Your Advantage.  Terry also participated in Digital Learning Materials to Enhance Instruction: A Promising Partnership for Faculty and Librarians, a three-part, Web-based interactive workshop; and Michael participated in several workshops, including Electronic Communications and Surveys: Wikis & Monkeys & Blogs and Library Outreach, Redefined: It’s a Wide New World.

Peter Hirtle, CUL’s intellectual property officer, was a panelist at the conference, Copyright at a Crossroads: The Impact of Mass Digitization on Copyright and Higher Education, held on June 14-16 by the Center for Intellectual Property at the University of Maryland University College.  Peter also gave a presentation, “Digital Preservation and Copyright,” at the 4th New York State Higher Education Initiative annual meeting at Columbia University on June 5.  Xin Li, the director of service innovation and resource planning, also attended.

Zsuzsa Koltay, the acting director of the Engineering Library, and Leah Solla, the chemistry librarian, were among the participants in a two-day workshop on user-centered design and usability held at Cornell.  Zsuzsa also presented a talk, “Library Ambassadors: Cornell’s Research Connection,” at the annual meeting of the International Association of Technical University Libraries in Porto, Portugal.  Leah taught Chem 602, Information Literacy for the Physical Scientist, again this semester; presented a talk, “Enhancing the Association through Mentorship,” at the March meeting of the American Chemical Association in Atlanta; and has been appointed to several ACS publication committees: the Joint Board-Council Committee on Publications, the Joint Board-Council Subcommittee on Copyright, and the Editorial Board of Chemical & Engineering News.

Michelle Paolillo, the system and network support specialist, attended a weeklong course on managing accounts and resources in a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 environment.

John Saylor, the acting coordinator for collection development, gave a talk on collection development and dissemination of National Science Digital Library image resources at a Northeast Regional Computing Program (NERCOMP) Workshop at Holy Cross College. The workshop was titled Are Digital Images Changing Teaching in Liberal Arts Colleges?  John is a co-author of “Metadata Aggregation and ‘automated digital libraries’: A Retrospective on the NSDL Experience.”

Donna Thomas, the head of daily operations in the Veterinary Library, and Cindy Lamb, a technical services specialist, participated in a workshop, Safety for Administrative and Office Professionals.  Cindy also attended the workshop Serials Management: Bringing Order to Chaos.

Pat Viele, the physics and astronomy librarian, attended the winter meeting of the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) in Anchorage.  She gave a tutorial, “Mining the Internet,” and an invited talk, “Melting the Frozen Curriculum with Information Fluency.”  At the American Physical Society (APS) March meeting in Baltimore, Pat participated in a discussion of the recommendations of the Joint APSAAPT Task Force on Graduate Education in Physics.

The Weill Cornell Medical Library Faculty attended the Annual Meeting of the Medical Library Association (MLA) in Phoenix, May 19-25.  Library Faculty participated in many activities at the meeting that shared and expanded their knowledge and skills in providing resources and services. 

It was a special annual meeting for Mark Funk, the head of Collection Development, because at that point Mark began a three-year tenure as president-elect, president, and immediate past president. He was invited to participate in a publisher focus group co-sponsored by the MLA, the MLA Scholarly Publishing Task Force, and the Society for Scholarly Publishing to discuss open access models, licensing practices and polices, and customer service issues in electronic publishing. 

Michael Wood, the Qatar liaison librarian and assistant head of Collection Development, participated in a roundtable on the management of e-resources, represented the New York-New Jersey Chapter as the incoming treasurer, and attended seminars on the latest developments in the library’s online resources. 

Carolyn Anne Reid, the library director, met with two Association of Academic Health Science Libraries committees—one on assessment and statistics and the other to review the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) Self-Study Questions. 

Kristine Alpi, the associate director, is on the 2006 National Program Committee.  She recorded for the fund-raising roundtable, attended the Journal of the Medical Library Association editorial board meeting, participated in a focus group on the Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and hosted the Indiana University alumni at the Library School reunion. 

Diana Delgado, the head of Access Services, attended a continuing education course on medical language and expert searching and co-hosted a group of Phoenix-area high school students exploring health sciences careers as they attended the McGovern Lecture delivered by Dr. Atul Gawande. 

helen ann brown, the acting head of Information Services, presented a paper entitled “From Pap to ThinPrep to HPV Vaccine: Detection and Eradication of Cervical Cancer.” Her activities for the Leadership & Management Section included representing section members at the Section Council, coordinating strategic planning efforts, and facilitating a roundtable on concepts in leadership and management. 

Rich McGowan, an information services librarian, gathered information on online resources at the Sunrise Seminars and attended presentations and posters on using technology to enhance library services.  It was the first MLA meeting for information services librarian Pattie Mongelia, who attended two continuing education classes to inform her practice—Understanding Health Care Literature: A Primer for Working with Evidence-based Health Care Principles, and Doing It Right: Supporting Systematic Reviews with Expert Searching and Project Management Skills.  She also participated in a roundtable on health information literacy and attended the Clinical Librarians and Evidence-based Healthcare group meeting. 

The winner of this year’s Thomson Scientific/Frank Bradway Rogers Information Advancement Award was New York Online Access to Health, a Web site to which Kristine Alpi, Diana Delgado, and Pattie Mongelia contribute.  Kristine Alpi also contributes to the Core Public Health Journal Project, which received the Louise Darling Medal for Distinguished Achievement in Collection Development in the Health Sciences. 

Susanne Whitaker, a veterinary reference librarian, and Pat Miller, a veterinary public services assistant, welcomed attendees of the Annual Veterinary School Open House to a library exhibit of materials of value to pet owners.  Pat’s dog, Owen, who is certified for pet therapy work, accompanied them.

Xian Wu, the Chinese Studies bibliographer and digital librarian in Wason, has received his master’s degree in Asian studies from Cornell.  Xian has worked at Cornell for more than three years and has managed to balance his work and class load by burning the midnight oil.
