New Award Honors Ross Atkinson

On September 14 the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS), a division of the American Library Association, announced an award in honor of Ross Atkinson. The press release read: “In conjunction with its 50th Anniversary Celebration in 2007, the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) is pleased to announce the establishment of the Ross Atkinson Lifetime Achievement Award. This new award honors the legacy of Ross Atkinson, distinguished library leader, author and scholar whose extraordinary service to ALCTS and the library community at-large serves as a model for those in the field.”

The award winner will receive a citation honoring his or her contributions and a stipend of $3,000 generously donated by EBSCO.

The award will be given to recognize the contribution of a library leader who has demonstrated exceptional service to ALCTS and its areas of interest (acquisitions, cataloging and classification, collection management and development, preservation and reformatting, and serials). Criteria for selection of the winner will be determined by the person’s accomplishments as they relate to leadership, including, but not limited to

  • Recognized leadership in professional associations at the local, state, regional, or national level, with emphasis on ALCTS

  • Acknowledged leader in and by the library community at large

  • Significant contribution to professional literature

  • Exemplary research in ALCTS areas

  • Recognition of achievements, e.g., awards, citations, etc.

ILR Theses and Dissertations

The first complete list of all ILR theses and dissertations is now available online. Susan LaCette, a reference specialist in the Catherwood Library, consulted alumni lists and Cornell Graduate School publications to compile this first list of theses written by ILR graduate students. ILR School Theses and Dissertations: A Listing, is available electronically through DigitalCommons@ILR. It contains not only an alphabetical list by author, but also by year. The theses are categorized into forty-two subject areas. ILR students searching for a thesis topic will find this resource of interest because it reveals the range of research undertaken from the present back to the first thesis accepted by the school in 1946. If you notice errors or omissions, please contact Susan LaCette with additions or corrections.
