Purpose:
In July of 2002, The University Librarian charged the Public Services Executive Committee (PSEC) with developing a plan to address the following issues:

  • What constitutes “more convenient business hours” for faculty, students and staff across the University, e.g., earlier openings, later closings, more weekend hours?
  • In which units would additional hours be most beneficial?
  • What services should the Library provide during extended hours?
  • How should the Library allocate resources to provide extended hours where they are needed.

Toward that end, staff created/gathered the following resources:

Patron Survey on Library Building Hours & Services
Description: Conducted 11/02-12/02, with 3,551 respondents. (Most received by Web form, fewer than 100 in hard copy, and approx. 20 emails.) Questions covered: demographics; which library used most often; satisfaction with current hours; services/spaces used/valued most; desire for 24 hour space; priorities given a tightened economy.

Description: Data collected from: Brown, Chicago, Columbia, Dartmouth, Harvard, MIT, Penn, Princeton, Stanford and Wisconsin. Includes data on: number of libraries; fewer hours during breaks?; recent or future hour changes; 24 hour access; recent studies on hours/services; maximum hours per day; security, staffing, special facilities.
Note:
Recent changes not reflected in the table: at Wisconsin the maximum number of service hours per day has increased from 7:30 a.m.-1 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.-2:45 a.m.
