Director of Instruction and Learning

Cornell University Library (CUL) seeks innovative and dynamic applicants for the position of Director of Instruction and Learning. The successful candidate will develop and lead a Division of Instruction, which will be a cornerstone for the newly formed organization within CUL: Instruction, Research, and Information Services (IRIS). IRIS is the largest of the CUL organizations, with over 150 staff members who work collaboratively to support instruction and learning, public services, research, preservation, collection development, and public programming. The world renowned Asia Collections (Echols, Wason, and South Asia) plus the Africana, Fine Arts, and Music Libraries round out the membership of IRIS.

The Director of Instruction and Learning will embrace an entrepreneurial and forward-looking approach to creating this Division, building upon Cornell's distinquished reference and instruction program and its international preeminence in research and training in preservation and digital library initiatives. Cornell University Library enjoys a well-deserved reputation for delivering exemplary services and resources as recognized in the 2002 ACRL Excellence in Academic Libraries Award.

The Director of Instruction and Learning will expand CUL's technical and bibliographic instruction program serving the humanities and social sciences, collaborate with other divisions in promoting information literacy and lifelong learning, and coordinate additional educational offerings through institutes, workshops, tutorials, internships, and residencies designed to meet the continuing education needs of library and information professionals around the world.

Responsibilities: The Director will report to the Assistant University Librarian for Instruction, Research, and Information Services and will serve as a member of the senior management team within IRIS. Responsibilities include:

  • Creating a Division of Instruction through a combination of dedicated full and part-time permanent staff, consultants, and program-specific instructors.
  • Planning, developing, and implementing innovative programs for instruction and learning for Cornell faculty, students, and staff.
  • Promoting new learning programs to the faculty in the humanities and social sciences, leveraging emerging technologies and techniques.
  • Building collaborative relationships with partners throughout the library, the university, and the broader community.
  • Exploring options for library-led course offerings in the Faculty of Computer and Information Science.
  • Establishing CUL as a teaching library through the development of a continuing education program in digital librarianship in partnership with others.
  • Supporting the Assistant University Librarian and the IRIS Director of Resources and Planning in developing business and marketing plans for new instruction and learning initiatives.

Knowledge/Experience

Required:

  • ALA-accredited master's degree or equivalent
  • Excellent organizational, teaching, and communication skills
  • Awareness of issues and trends in librarianship, education, and information technology
  • Ability to work collaboratively within CUL and effectively with a diverse clientele
  • Ability to work in an innovative and rapidly changing environment
  • Successful project management and/or grant-writing experience
  • Successful teaching and/or library instruction experience

Desired:

  • Advanced degree in Humanities, Social Science, or Education
  • Three plus years of experience in an academic or research library


Salary/Appointment Level: commensurate with experience
