Techncial training session notes

On Thursday Sept 9 Library Systems staff attended a one day technical training class conducted by Mark Wilson of Endeavor.Focus of the class was on the relationship between the various components of Voyager and the Operating System software and hardware. Topics covered included:

  1. hardware configuration options
  2. networking amongst them
  3. Unix tables of Voyager server entry points
  4. hierarchy of Voyager server software modules
  5. client configuration
  6. troubleshooting

Mark provided

  • an overview of the servers and how they are /will be set up
  • a demonstration of client installation
  • a quick introduction to the Oracle environment
  • a trouble-shooting strategy that emphasized how the parts of the system interrelate.

We were introduced to the standard conventions used throughout the Endeavor installation, and so developed an appreciation of it's elegance and simplicity. This was a good beginning to establishing a solid foundation of understanding the system. It was a really enjoyable session. Although not formally structured, the casual approach of the class allowed us to take the class in whatever direction we wanted to. The instructor was well versed in the technical underpinnings on Voyager. Although we all had different backgrounds, I feel that the instructor did a good job of teaching at the right level. This class was a good "Introduction to Voyager Technology 101" class.
