Configuration Group Notes from the November 2, 1999 meeting Attending: Lynn Brown, Karen Calhoun, Philip Herold, Jim LeBlanc, Fred Muratori, Pat Schafer, Ed Weissman We welcomed Fred Muratori as a member of the OPAC/Gateway Configuration Group. In order to prepare for the OPAC/Gateway Configuration Group's recommendation on whether, how and when Gateway functionality can be migrated into Voyager, we held the first of two meetings on the Library Gateway. Karen Calhoun presented and demonstrated the Gateway catalog. She showed both the public and the staff views, showing how Gateway records are derived from and relate to the Notis MARC and OPAC records. We identified information that appears in the Gateway but not in Notis. This includes: 1) Browsing sub-captions--the sub-topics that appear when you click on certain browsing captions beneath the Networked Resources search box., e.g., Company Information and News, General, Government and Public Policy, Industry and Labor, Management, Marketing and Advertising, and Trade and Commodities under the caption Business, Labor, Management and Economics. 2) Some keywords that have been added only to Gateway records 3) The selector ID 4) The interface "Help" icon which links to the "Interface Features" tables. We discussed the value of browsing as the collection of networked resources continues to grow and the idea of replacing browsing capabilities with "subject guides." At our next meeting, on November 15, Tom Gale will make a presentation on the technical underpinnings of the Gateway, specifying additional unique information and functionality found in the Gateway but not in Notis. Tom will be working with the OPAC/Gateway Configuration Group at least through the time a recommendation on Gateway/Voyager integration is developed and sent to the Implementation Management Team and the Implementation Steering Committee.
