been chosen as representative "best" sources for free (or nearly free)
information for career development. Resources for career officers as
well as students are included.

Guide) This meta-site indexes web sites which provide tips on
most job search aspects. These include choosing an occupation, resume
writing, interview preparation, salary negotiation, and more.
- Headhunter.net
provides a Career ResourceCenter, with data on salaries, market trends,
and business forecasts. Tips on resume writing and relocation. Links
to a variety of on-line job search resources.
- JobWeb
contains resources on interview and resume prep as well as links to
sites of interest for minorities, international students, persons
with disabilities, and persons relocating.
- Net-Temps
offers guidance on the job search essentials. It also provides a directory
of executive recruiters, a directory of companies which is searchable
by industry and state, a chat room moderated by a career consultant,
and an entrepeneurial resource center.

Letters for Job Hunters contains pointers on writing cover letters
and other employment correspondence.
- Vault.com
-- The "insider career network." Indispensable source
of insider information about companies and industries, as well as
discussion boards for selected and general career topics. Free registration
gives you access to Vault reports for free.
- Wet
Feet.com -- "Inside insight on jobs and careers".
Competing insider service to Vault.com. Also offers free access
to full reports to those who register (for free). Excellent
company and industry coverage.

Alert
Services / Tracking Website Changes
Many career sites
offer free "alerts" that list the most recent jobs added to
their database. Many newspapers, trade journals and associations also
provide free newsletters and other current information via e-mail.
Selected sites:
- Idealist.org
-- "My Idealist" is their personalized job listings service
for non-profit positions.
- LatPro.com
-- Offers Latin Career News (specifically for job seekers,
appears monthly), Latin Tech Weekly and Hispanic Recruiter
Review (monthly).
- WetFeet.com
newsletters require free registration, but are full of useful
career advice. One of their newsletters targets those seeking internships
and first jobs.
- Whatoiljobs.com
-- Requires free registration.
News alerts are
a related type of alert. They are offered by many newspapers and media
outlets (such as the New York Times or Google.com) and will
send you e-mail updates about stories/topics you specify.
Website tracking
tools are an easy way to know when a particular site's content has changed.
The best free source is WatchThatPage.com,
a service that also offers an enhanced pay option.

Associations
Almost every association
website now includes a career section. These sites are full of industry
or occupation-specific information that might include job listings,
resume advice, or trend reports.
An
excellent database that contains thousands of US-based associations
is available from ASAE, the American Society of Association Executives.
Search by category, city, state, or keyword.
International associations
are available from the comprehensive Union
of International Associations site.

Company
Profiles & Information
Corporateinformation.com
requires free registration but provides information for international
companies as well as US-based ones. It's an excellent starting point
for company research.
Hoovers.com
is a business information website that includes industry as well as
company data. Institutions (or individuals) who opt for their subscription
service are able to create lists of companies, but the free site is
still useful for basic research.
Different industries
provide industry-specific databases. For example, the National
Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts provides free access
to its NAREIT
Company Directory.
PRARS.com
(The Public Register's Annual Report Service) provides ) free annual
reports for more than 3600 companies. By using their site, you can obtain
the annual reports for multiple companies via a single order.
The best source
of information for non-profits is Idealist.org.
They provide a tremendous amount of information and provide personal
accounts (for e-mailed updates).
Some sites offer
country-specific search engines. Look through the "world"
and US-city options at the bottom of the main Yahoo!
page. This will lead to Yahoo! India,
Yahoo! Mexico, etc.

Job Network -- An excellent, international resource.

-- Search their database (by industry, job category, keyword, or location)
for open positions in hundreds of financial firms. Sign up for
a "job alert" and be notified of new positions which match
your criteria.

General:
- Career.com,
a recruitment site administered by HEART Advertising, Inc., was selected
by IBN, Internet Business Network, as one of the Top 25 Recruitment
sites on the Internet . Career.com allows users to search by company
name, job category, and location. It has small sections targeted at
entry level and international jobseekers.
- Headhunter.net
contains the J.O.B.S. database for thousands of the latest opportunities
from hundreds of employers. Post a resume and check out on-line job
fairs at this site. Contains profiles of prospective employers with
links to their company websites.
- CareerBuilder
lists Newspaper Employment Ads from many major cities. It provides
expanded profiles on major employers and includes on-line resume submission.
The user fills in forms; CareerBuilder returns it in a resume format
which can then be viewed by employers.
- CareerSite
allows users to search both its database of jobs and those listed
in Usenet newsgroups. It provides a "virtual agent" which pulls job
postings based on confidential user created profiles upon login (a
free service). It also provides company profiles and allows users
to search by company name. Users may store their formatted resumes
with employers and then request CareerSite to send it, for free, to
employers. Members can develop a confidential, searchable profile.
- CareerVoyager.com
-- An exhaustive meta-site of every variety of career site, be they
general or specific.
- Careers
in Business contains listings of job openings at specific corporations.
It is smaller than other job sites, but geared specifically toward
MBAs. It also contains profiles of business occupations and job search
advice. The information is maintained at the Fisher College of Business
at the Ohio State University. Includes a list of other career sites
available on the Internet.
- Career
Resource Homepage contains databases of various professional organizations,
research institutions, government agencies and other non-profit organizations.
Also has links to other databases maintained by various employers
seeking workers.
- Chronicle
of Higher Education - Academe This Week lists over 800 openings,
primarily in academe but also in the corporate world.
- Employment
Opportunities and Job Resources on the Internet (a.k.a. The Riley
Guide) is a meta-site that indexes both general and occupationally-specific
job listing sites. Organized by subject categories to allow users
to find the most appropriate site for their job search needs.
- Information
Week Online contains a resource guide for the technical job seeker.
- JOBTRACK's
Job Search allows students and alums to search for permanent and
internship positions with employers interested in students from specific
universities.
- JobWeb
posts internships and permanent jobs from corporations and the Federal
government and contains links to sites that list postgraduate and
field work jobs. Provides descriptions of various employers and links
to their home pages.
- Monster
Board posts jobs across occupations and disciplines, will automatically
send you job postings based on the personal profile you create, and
provides profiles of the companies which post with Monster Board.
It contains U.S. and International listings.
- NationJob
offers many job openings as well as a free personal job consultant
service. Searchable by occupation, education, salary requirements,
and geographic location.
- RON,
Recruiters On-line Network, allows users to search listings via a
simple keyword search engine.

High-Tech/Startups:
- Dice.com
-- One of the top online high tech career sites. Search for
contract and / or full-time positions.
- MBA
FreeAgents.com -- Provides both full-time and temporary assignments,
geared towards startups and the "new economy".
- Startup
Company Jobs information from About.com
-- Provides links to Silicon Valley, Asian and other tech-oriented
job sites.

Human
Resources:

International:
- EscapeArtist.com
maintains a "Jobs
Overseas Index Page" which links to job listing sites for
a range of countries.
- Fincareer.com
maintains a "Global
Players" list of banks, accounting firms, insurance companies,
etc. Includes the name of each firm (with a link to its website)
as well as specific information for MBAs, PhDs, and Master's
graduates.
- Idealist.org
maintains an extensive meta-list of international non-profit job
sites.
- JobsAbroad.com
also provides travel resources such as State Department travel warnings.
- MBA
Enterprise Corps -- "During a 15-month assignment, Corps
members serve as management consultants for host companies in the
process of adjusting to a market economy." Excellent
international volunteer opportunities for senior MBA students and
recent graduates.
- The
Riley Guide has an extensive International

Internships:
- AfterCollege.com
has an extensive list of internships that can be viewed by category
and e-mailed directly from the site.. Only registered students and
alumnus may search their database or view their employer research
information.
- InternAbroad.com
allows for single or multi-country searches.
- InternshipPrograms.com
has a searchable internships
database, and seems to be directed towards undergraduates.
After you've registered for free you can also access their
"insider" overviews of selected internships.
- InternWeb.com
requires free registration but includes an unusual category -- virtual
internships. These positions range in hours worked per week, and
include opportunities to intern as media marketers, editors/writers,
and web designers.
- Rising
Star Internships allows intern seekers to either post a resume
or look through lists
of categorized positions. Though one of the smaller intern sites,
the positions are international and diverse.
| TIP:
If you are interested in interning with a particular company
or organization, check its website for possible leads.
Many firms and non-profit groups now have information online
which details their internship programs. For example,
the American Red Cross
offers paid
and unpaid internships. |

Language-Specific:
- BilingualCareer.com's
primary language interests are Vietnamese, Spanish, Cantonese, Korean,
Japanese, and Mandarin.
- The DiversityInc.com
"advanced"
search does not offer a language-specific search field, but enter
a specific language into the keyword search box to find positions
that require bilingual candidates.
- LatPro.com
targets Hispanic and bilingual professionals and the search results
page includes includes an unusual feature -- work authorization details.

Job Bank is a product of the Public Employment
Service; this large database of job listings can be searched using
occupational/geographic menus or by keyword. Contains a link to the
Occupational Outlook Handbook and projects future need for people
in various occupations. Roughly 1000 new jobs are added to this site
daily. Covers the business occupations well.
Careers
in Government is a clearninghouse for US government positions.
Regsitered users may create a "search agent" that saves
search criteria. Jobs may be viewed by state/city.
ExecSearches.com
-- "Independently owned and operated since 1999, ExecSearches.com
now services top non-profit, public sector, and socially conscious
organizations and other search firms and 3rd party recruiters in the
United States and around the World."
Firstgov.Gov
-- This site is the US Government's official web portal, and job seekers
will value the site's inclusion of links to all governmental organizations,
be they federal or local. By drilling down to the city level, one
can find job listings for positions across the country. Use the excellent
left-hand navigation feature on the main page.
Idealist.Org
-- Search for positions with "20,000 organizations in 150 countries."
Signup for their e-mail
update services.
Philanthropy
News Network Online -- Search by job type (executive, development,
etc) or subscribe to their "Nonprofit
Job Alert".
The US
Government's official job listings site has excellent search options
-- keyword, location, agency, category, salary range, etc.

Pharmaceuticals:
International
Pharmajobs -- "International Pharmajobs Ltd is an Internet-based
job market specializing in the Pharmaceutical and Biotech industries.
Current job opportunities cover pre-clinical research to marketing,
entry level through upper management positions."

Real
Estate :
RealEstateJobs.com
provides not only jobs listings but a useful "library" of
resources including a salary survey.
SelectLeaders.com,
"your real estate job source", provides job listings, a
resume submission service, and an alert service.

Temporary:
Guru.com
is a leading freelance job site used by more than 30,000 companies.
Contracts might last mere weeks or run for many months. Either search
project postings or post your profile.
Net-Temps.com
-- Search for contract (or full-time) positions in particular
industries (such as Internet, Management, Health Care, etc.). Includes
international positions.

The US
Occupational Outlook is a key source. Available in print in most
libraries, the online version is easy to navigate and includes these
categories of information: "Nature of the Work | Working Conditions
| Employment | Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement | Job
Outlook | Earnings | Related Occupations | Sources of Additional Information."
Other countries
have developed their own occupational profiles. Canada's appears on
its Human Resources site
and is available in English or French.
MBA-Specific:
Careers
in Business contains information on a variety
of business career areas, including banking & finance, accounting,
management consulting, and logistics. Profiles include skill requirements,
trends in occupational market, salary levels, top employers in the
market, and interviews with people in the occupation. The site points
to resources on the Internet and in print which are relevant to each
occupation. The information is maintained at the Fisher College of
Business at Ohio State University.
Employment
Opportunities and Job Resources on the Internet (a.k.a. The Riley
Guide) This meta-site indexes web sites which provide profiles
of a range of occupations, including the traditional MBA occupations.
Management
Consulting Online provides a career guide to Management Consulting.
The guide includes a discussion of the skills required, resources
available, salary surveys, and occupational trends. It also provides
links to the leading firms & their home pages. It also contains a
variety of articles, from leading journals as well as some written
specifically for this page, on various aspects of the industry.

- Business
Internet Index: The "BII" is Cornell University's
Management Library's collection of free Internet sites in various
(mostly) business categories. It's a good starting point for free
business research.
- Google's
Advanced Search -- A more sophisticated search screen that
lets you set specific parameters for your search (such as file format,
language, etc.). Read their helpful advanced
search tips.
- Library
of Congress' Portals
to the World -- An excellent starting point for general
information about countries. Includes information about government,
health, history, and search engines.
- World
Bank's Country
Information -- Search by country and then look at data
and statistics such as a country profile or development data.
- Yahoo's
"search" site
-- Yahoo has developed its own search engine (and no longer uses Google's)
and created for it a sleak, customizable interface. Easily add or
remove those categories that interest you.

- Magportal
-- Use its search engine to locate specific articles of drill down
the category tree. Interface is very clean and easy-to-use. Use the
"My Articles" feature to capture articles of interest and
annotate them for your personal use.
- Topix
-- Excellent tool for targeted news in various categories. Updated
continuously. Don't miss the left-hand industries column
that links directly to dozens of industry-specific news stories (from
apparel to food science to telecom).

Career
Resource Center is a massive meta-site for jobs categorized by
location, type, and more.
Chronicle
of Higher Education - Academe This Week indexes career services,
alumni, and human resources office webpages at many colleges and universities.
It also indexes employer web pages, resume posting sites, job search
newsgroups, professional societies and other organizations' home pages.
Employment
Opportunities and Job Resources on the Internet (a.k.a. The Riley
Guide) This meta-site indexes virtually all useful job search
web sites, ranging from job listing sites to company information sites
to resume writing sites.
Pam
Pohly's Net Guide lists sites for healthcare management job seekers.
JobHunt,
a meta-list of online job-search resources and services.
JobWeb
links to job listing sites in the following categories: general job
listing sites, job listings by field, job listings by subscription,
job listings by newsgroups, job listings by college career centers,
summer work, internships, fieldwork & postgraduate options, headhunters,
search firms and temp agencies.

Rankings
Pointing students
to "best of" lists helps them concentrate on the company qualities
that are most important to them and also expands the number of firms
that fit certain criteria. Well-known publications such as Forbes
and Business Week annually provide rankings of top businesses.
Many other publications and information providers do too, and a key
meta-resource for the broader data is Gary Price's well-respected List
of Lists.

- Career.com,

Job Options allows users to post resumes in .txt format. Users
may post directly or y sending an attachment via e-mail.
- MBA
Careers contains a searchable listing of jobs open to MBAs. It
allows users to post resumes via an online form, provides links to
a variety of MBA resources, and provides limited company profiles.
Contains a directory with links to U.S. and international business
school web sites.
- Net-Temps
provides a resume form. Users log into database and openings which
meet the resume profile are generated automatically. Users are not
sent job openings via e-mail. Postings are confidential; i.e. names,
addresses, etc cannot be seen by those searching the resume database.
- Online
Career Center allows users to post resumes in ASCII or html format.
- RON,
Recruiters On-line Network, allows users to post resumes by cutting
and pasting information into their form. Approximately 6,000 employers
are members of RON. Users can also search RON's directory of recruiters.

Salary
Information and Surveys
- CareerJournal.com
is the Executive Career Site of the Wall Street Journal. You'll find
daily updates and thousands of archived articles detailing the news
and trends that are critical to your job search and career advancement.
CareerJournal.com offers a searchable database of job postings from
top companies. Positions featured include senior and general management,
sales, marketing, finance, technology and a range of related fields.
- CityRating.com
combines upward job trends data with salary outlooks in different
parts of the United States. Results show those cities that "have
shown an uptrend both in workforce numbers and salary amounts in recent
years."
- Compensation
and Benefits Reports,
published by Abbott, Langer & Associates, provides users with salary
survey data for various career fields. Basic reports are free, in
depth reports are provided for a fee. The reports contain salary ranges
by occupation, geographic area, length of experience, and educational
level.
- The
Corporate Library is intended to serve as a central repository
for research, study, and critical thinking about the nature of the
modern global corporation, with a special focus on corporate governance
and the relationship between company management, their boards and
their shareowners. Use this site to retrieve CEO compensation packages
and employment contracts (publicly traded firms only) as well as Director
biographies for the companies in the S&P 1500 Supercomposite Index.
Screen on a variety of features to identify matching directors (e.g.
company name, age, attendance problems, # shares held, etc.) The site
also contains research reports on trends in corporate governance.
- Information World's
Compensation
Surveys -- Includes links to articles and tables concerning salaries.
Also, see their 1999 "Average
Salaries for IT Professionals" figures.
- Job
Options' extensive list of salary
information. Salary surveys for different industries are
provided, including executives and managers.
- Job
Smart Salary Surveys provides users with overy 150 salary surveys
in general and specific occupations. It includes tips on negotiation
strategy. Surveys are pulled from several sources, including general
periodicals, local newspapers, recruiters, and employment agencies.
- Occupational
Outlook Handbook, published by the Department of Labor, provides
profiles of occupations, focusing on hiring trends, job requirements,
and expected salaries. Not limited to MBA professions, this source
gives a general overview of a wide range of careers.
- RealEstateJobs.com
provides for free an excellent, comprehensive salary survey prepared
by CEL & Associates. Bonuses are included.
- Relocation
Salary Calculator allows you to compute the equivalent salary
you will need in your new location. To use the calculator, fill in
your income and the code for your city of origin and your destination
city. This service now covers internatinal cities as well as domestic
cities.
- SiliconValley.com's
Salary
Survey -- Details compensation by company, gender, top onuses,
top options, etc.
- Wall Street Journal's
"Salaries
by Industry" Tables -- Choose any of the industries listed
and then select one of the "salary tables".

- DMOZ
-- Known as the "Open Directory Project", DMOZ is maintained
by editors from around the world.
- GeniusFind
-- An excellent site that lists sites that fall into particular categories.
- Teoma
-- A search engine that finds the "best" sites by means
of "subject specific popularity". After you search, look
at the "resources" section in the lower right portion of
the screen.

Bio:
Angela is Coordinator
of Public Services at Cornell University's Johnson Graduate School of
Management Library. She is the Management Library’s career specialist
and also serves as liaison to the Johnson School’s Career Management
Center. Throughout the academic year she teaches a series of independent
job search workshops for MBA students and MBA clubs, and also offers
career consultations which are open to the entire Cornell community.
Prior to coming to New York in 1998, Angela was the Webmaster and Librarian
for Electronic Initiatives at the Nova Scotia Department of Labour in
Halifax, Nova Scotia.
