Stock Index Web Sites

  • Dow Jones Averages provides daily or annual data from 1896 - present. Users may only bring up one day's worth of data at a time (annual data is available for the complete history in spreadsheet format). Contains charts spanning a decade at a time, with notes indicating the major events that triggered fluctuations in the Dow. This site also provides a description of the Industrial index and background on its composition and calculation, and does the same for the Transportation and Utility indexes.

  • FT.com provides recent prices on the FTSE 100, the FTSE Eurotrack 200, the DAX, CAC-40, Nikkei, and Dow Jones Industrial Average. It contains global information from countries including Japan, U.K., Europe, Asia-Pacific, The Americas, etc. Registration is required to access these files; it is FREE.

  • Multex Investor provides company snapshots, free real-time stock (and major U.S. index) quotes, price charts, and articles from PRN and BW newswire services. It also provides user with stockscreening tools and industry, sector, and company rankings (biggest movers) on over 10,000 equities trading on the NYSE, Nasdaq, AMEX, and OTC Bulletin Board. Detailed financials & ratios are available.

  • Nikkei Net provides daily historical Nikkei 225 averages and volume in graph format only (current day numerical figure is given. Description and history of the Nikkei, as well as methodology of calculation is given. Click on the "Markets" button at the top of the page.

  • NYSE Market Information posts daily NYSE exchange volume back to 1888, daily closing prices for Composite, Industrial, Financial, Transportation, and Utility Indices back to 1966, monthly NYSE total and common # of shares outstanding, market value, issues, and listed companies, 1994-present, monthly market cap by symbol 1999-present, monthly share volume by symbol Oct. 1998-present, year-to-date share volume by symbol, 1997-present.

  • S&P Index Services provides descriptions and member listings for the S&P 100, 500, Midcap 400, Smallcap 600, and S&P/BARRA Lists. Prior day closing data available, as well as prior month total return and total return year-to-date.

  • Stock Indices contains a list of links to over 40 major stock indexes (NYSE, Dow Jones, NASDAQ, etc.) throughout the world.

  • Weekly Dow Jones Industrial Average, 1900-1989 provides Dow Jones Industrial Averages, weekly from 1900-1989. Daily data available from 1915. Gives hi, low, close, and volume.

  • Yahoo! Finance provides histories on the main U.S. indexes back to the 1970's, downloadable in .xls format. Data available in daily, weekly, or monthly format. Click the link on the main page for the index you're interested in, then click the max link, then under Historical Quotes, click daily, weekly, or monthly.

  • Zacks Investment Research specializes in corporate earnings estimates. This site provides free estimates, but charges for analyst reports.
