International Business Resource List

This resource list has been compiled by the staff of the Management Library and is intended to provide an overview of resouces available for international business research. All print resources are located in the Management Library, unless otherwise noted.


Company Research

America's Corporate Families and International Affiliates (HG4057 A16 in Ready Reference). Detailed information on U.S. family members of foreign ultimate parent companies as well as foreign subsidiaries of U.S. ulitimates. Corporate family listings are presented in three forms: alphabetical, geographical, and industrial classification.

Corporate Affiliations: International Public and Private Companies (HG4057 A21 in Ready Reference). Contains listings for companies with headquarters located outside of the United States Subsidiaries for these parent companies are included, whether or not they are located in the United States. Also included are outside service firms attached to the parent company..

Directory of American Firms Operating in Foreign Countries (T12 D582 in Ready Reference). Authoritative source of information on American firms that have branches, subsidiaries, or affiliates outside the United States. Part One is an alphabetical listing of all American corporations with foreign operations and Part Two is an alphabetical listing of corporations, by country.

Directory of Foreign Firms Operating in the United States (HF54 U5 A63 in Ready Reference). Contains information on more than 7,200 businesses in the United States that are owned (either wholly or in part) by foreign firms. More than 2,800 foreign firms from 79 countries are included.

Factiva provides articles from more than 10,000 newspapers, magazines, journals, and wire services worldwide. Search for articles about specific aspects of a company, including certain divisions or operations in specific regions. Some resources are available in their original language and nine different interface languages are available.

Hoovers contains profiles of companies, including large international companies. These profiles include overviews, histories, products, subsidiaries, financial statements, officer information, and more.

International Directory of Company Histories (HD2721 I62 in Reference). Excellent historical background on major companies throughout the world. Most companies chosen for inclusion have achieved a minimum of $100 million in annual sales and are leading influences in their industries or geographical locations.

Investext provides full-text analyst reports on companies worldwide.

Mergent Online provides web-based access to detailed corporate financial histories (including capital changes) and operational histories. It also details property, subsidiaries, officers/directors, long-term debt, financial statements, capital stock, and financial statements and ratio analysis. Included are links to news headlines and annual reports.

Principal International Businesses (HF54 U5 P95 in Ready Reference). More than 50,000 companies are included in this world marketing directory. Companies have been selected from the Dun & Bradstreet database and are the largest employers worldwide.

World Business Directory (HG4009 W67 in Hotel Library Reference). Detailed information on more than 136,000 businesses involved in international trade, including contact information, industry and product data, and financial and employment figures.


Country Overviews

Doing Business and Investing In... (HF1205 I43 in Reference). PricewaterhouseCoopers publishes a series of guides in countries in which PricewaterhouseCoopers firms have offices or carry out work. The profiles contain information on a country's business environment, foreign investment and trade opportunities, its regulatory environment, labor practices, financial system, tax laws, and more. Dates of individual guides vary.

EIU Country Reports is produced by the Economist Intelligence Unit and examines and explains in depth the issues shaping countries throughout the world: the political scene, economic policy, domestic economy, sectoral trends, and foreign trade and payments. Detailed two-year forecasts complement the analysis and pinpoint political and economic developments and trends.

Market Insight contains international country data, including reports from the CIA World Factbook and DRI Country Overviews.

OECD Economic Outlook, OECD Economic Studies, and OECD Economic Surveys (HC59 O68 O28 in Reference) are published by the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development in Paris. Each of these resources is available electronically from Business Source Premier.

Political Risk Yearbook (HD2755.5 P6552 in Reference) covers more than 100 countries and compiles 18-month and five-year forecasts based on a variety of political scenarios.

Stat-USA contains Country Commercial Guides in its Globus and NTDB section. These annually-updated guides, published by the Department of Commerce, are written for U.S. companies considering international investment. Each report discusses economic trends & conditions, the political environment, the marketing of U.S. products and services in a particular country, leading sectors for U.S. exports and investment, trade regulations & standards, investment climate, trade and project financing, and more.

The Statesman's Yearbook (JA51 S79 in Ready Reference) provides a detailed examination of the politics, cultures, and economies of the world.


Financial Markets

CRB Commodity Yearbook (HF1041 C73 in Ready Reference). Comprehensive source of commodity and futures market information. CRB Commodity Yearbook provides crucial information on more than 100 domestic and international commodities—from aluminum to gold to zinc—and includes seasonal patterns and historical data from the past ten years as well as current (as of the last three months) pricing and trading patterns on a monthly and annual basis. CRB Infotech is the CD-ROM version of the yearbook (HF1041 C723, ask at circulation desk).

Global Stock Market Factbook (HG5993 E53 in Ready Reference). Published by Standard & Poors. Provides details of the performance and characteristics of world stock markets for last ten years as measured by S&P/Citigroup Global Equity Indices, S&P's Emerging Markets Database, and local stock market indices.

Hewlett-Packard Handbook of World Stock, Derivative & Commodity Exchanges (HG4551 H36 in Ready Reference). In-depth information about 245 exchanges in 106 countries and regions.

World Federation of Exchanges: Annual Report and Statistics (HG4551 I619 in Ready Reference) Annual compilation of statistics by the World Federation of Exchanges, the trade association for regulated securities and derivative markets.

World Stock Exchange Fact Book (HG4551 W922 in Ready Reference). 25 years of data on more than 45 stock exchanges, including structure, rules and practices, commissions, taxes, and regulations.


Financial Statistics

Balance of Payments Statistics Yearbook (HF1014 I62 B17 in Ready Reference). Published by the International Monetary Fund. Issued in three parts, this annual publication contains balance of payments and international investment position data. Part I provides detailed tables on balance of payments statistics for approximately 165 countries and international investment position data for 89 countries. Part 2 presents tables of regional and world totals of major balance of payments components. Part 3 contains descriptions of methodologies, compilation practices, and data sources used by reporting countries.

Bloomberg is an online service providing quotes and technical analysis on U.S. and international securities. The service also provides company, industry, and market news, as well as U.S. and international economic indicators. Bloomberg provides both current and historical data.

Datastream Advance is an online service that provides significant historical international data, including equity, index, commodity, currency, bond, futures, options, economic data, and more. Datastream Advance is available on Computers 10 & 11 in the Management Library.

EIU Country Data is produced by the Economist Intelligence Unit and serves as a comprehensive source of economic indicators and forecasts for more than 150 countries.

Government Finance Statistics Yearbook (HA40 F5 I61 in Ready Reference). Published by the International Monetary Fund, provides detailed data on transactions in revenue, expense, net acquistion of assets and liabilities, and balances of assets and liabilities of general government and its subsectors.

International Financial Statistics Yearbook, available electronically as IFS Online. Published by the International Monetary Fund, a standard source of statistics on all aspects of international finance, including exchange rates, liquidity, banking, interest rates, production, prices, and more. Print edition is available in the Management Library (HG1 I612 in Ready Reference).

International Yearbook of Industrial Statistics (HC10 I65 in Ready Reference). Published by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, provides statistical indicators to facilitate international comparisons relating to the manufacturing sector.

Thompson Bank Directory (HG2441 H19 in Ready Reference). Directory of bank offices throughout the world. Information includes credit ratings and global rankings (based on total assets) of the head office institution.

World Development Indicators (HC59 W923 in Ready Reference). Published by the World Bank, provides a comprehensive source of international development statistics.


Global News

Business Source Premier is a comprehensive, business periodical database that includes scholarly journals and business periodicals covering topics such as management, economics, finance, accounting, international business and much more. The database also includes other sources of full text information such as country economic reports from the EIU, Global Insight, ICON Group and CountryWatch and detailed company profiles for the world's 10,000 largest companies.

Factiva provides articles from more than 10,000 newspapers, magazines, journals, and wire services worldwide. Search for articles about specific aspects of a company, including certain divisions or operations in specific regions. Some resources are available in their original language and nine different interface languages are available.

Lexis-Nexis contains a World News component that will allow searches for news limited to specified geographic locations.

World News Connection contains material obtained from non-U.S. open-source political speeches, television programs, radio broadcasts, newspaper articles, periodicals, and books. The contenct focuses primarily on military, political, environmental, scientific, and socioeconomic issues and events.


Industry Research

Associations Unlimited provides an easily searchable interface to more than 460,000 international, national, regional, state, and local organizations, including non-profits.

Encyclopedia of Associations (HS61 G15 in Ready Reference) lists more than 22,000 national and international organizations, including trade, business, and commercial associations.

Encyclopedia of Global Industries is available electronically through Business & Company Resource Center and provides an expanded look at more than 125 business sectors of global significance, including articles about the origins, development, trends, and key statistics of each industry. The print version is also available in the Management Library (HC102 E534 in Ready Reference).

International Yearbook of Industrial Statistics (HC10 I65 in Ready Reference). Published by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, provides statistical indicators to facilitate international comparisons relating to the manufacturing sector.

Mergent Online contains detailed industry reports on a variety of industries in North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific.


Market Research

Business & Company Resource Center provides access to a variety of Datamonitor Reports, which contain a mix of marketing intelligence, analysis, and forecasting for many key international markets.

Global Market Information Database contains 6-year historic market size data for more than 330 consumer products in 52 countries, plus 5-year forecasts. With GMID, it is very easy to analyze trends in consumer spending, establishing the largest markets for a product, the fastest growing markets, those that are mature and those that are in decline.

International Marketing Data and Statistics is a statistical yearbook of marketing information for more than 160 countries. A companion volume of marketing data is European Marketing Data and Statistics. Both of these resources are available electronically through Global Market Information Database or in print (HA42 I56 and HA1107 E89 in Ready Reference).

Mintel provides market research reports in full-text format for the U.K., U.S., and some European countries.

Stat-USA provides Industry Sector Analysis reports in its Globus & NTDB section. These reports provide an anlysis of particular markets in countries that the U.S. Department of Commerce believes are potential investment opportunities for U.S. businesses. The reports provide market research data as well as industry analysis.

World Market Share Reporter is available electronically through Business & Company Resource Center and serves as a compilation of reported world market share data and rankings on companies, products, and services. Data is indexed by brand as well as company name, product, and SIC code. The print version is also available in the Management Library (HF5410 W92 in Ready Reference).


Trade Information

Direction of Trade Statistics Yearbook (HA13 D59 in Ready Reference). Published by the International Monetary Fund, provides current data for approximately 156 countries on the value of imports from and exports to their most important trading partners.

Directory of United States Importers and Directory of United States Exporters (HF3012 D595 and HF3011 D59 in Ready Reference). Provides a listing of U.S. importers, indexed by product, company, and geographic region.

Exporter's Encyclopedia (HF3011 E96 in Ready Reference). Brief guides to business practices and resources, including country information on trade regulations and documentation.

The Handbook of Country Risk (HG4538 R57 in Ready Reference). Provides up-to-date analysis of the risks involved in trading in more than140 countries, giving each a unique risk rating, highlighting key economic indicators, likelihood of payment, risks and opportunities in emerging markets, and industrial sector performance overviews.

UN Commodity Trade Statistics Database is produced by the United Nations and lists trade statistics, provided by more than130 countries, detailed by commodity and partner country to the United Nations. Coverage extends back to 1962 and all values are converted in US dollars and metric units.

UNCTAD Handbook of Statistics (HF91 H23 in Ready Reference). Published by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, provides a comprehensive collection of statistical data relevant to the analysis of international trade, investment, and development.
