  • Library Research for International Careers (11/22, 4:30-5:30) -- Learn how to research the global job marketplace and put yourself in position to take advantage of opportunities in the international arena. Registration required.

  • Library services will be unavailable from Saturday, September 24 at 4:00 until Sunday, September 25 at Noon. This outage is necessary so that CIT can install an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to support the university's critical computing and network services. The Cornell University Library Gateway, including the Library Catalog, e-Reserves, Find e-Journals, Find Databases, Find Articles, and most digital resources will NOT be available during this time. NetPrint will also be unavailable in all of the libraries and computer labs on campus. Other central computing services that will be affected include Cornell e-mail, Blackboard, uPortal, CUInfo and the main Cornell website. The Management Library is offering Entrepreneurship workshops for the spring semester. Find industry trends, identify competitors, and assess your customer market. This workshop is highly recommended for students writing business plans. Registration is required. Entrepreneurship workshops will be held on the following dates this semester:
  • March 1, 4:30-5:30 (B09 Sage Hall)
  • March 10, 4:30-5:30 (B05 Sage Hall)
  • April 5, 4:30-5:30 (B05 Sage Hall)

January 2005

  • It's time to register for our spring workshops! Our popular Top 4 in 40 class starts January 25th, and we are offering several other training sessions throughout the fall semester. If you don't see a class that meets your needs, please let us know -- we may schedule additional classes based on interest.


  • RefWorks, a web-based tool for managing citations and bibliographies, is now available to the campus community through joint funding by the CU Library and Cornell Information Technologies. RefWorks allows users to create and organize a personalized, web-based database of bibliographic references imported from text files or online databases that can be accessed from anywhere in the world. RefWorks interfaces with MS Word to add citations or footnotes and produce a paper and bibliography, properly formatted in the chosen citation style. Learn more about RefWorks by visiting the RefWorks at Cornell site, or speak to any member of the Management Library reference staff.

December 2004

In keeping with Socrates' idea that the truth should be pursued, not discovered, Johnson School students now have access to Socrates, a social research database. Socrates provides unique company profiles that include coverage of issues related to community, diversity, employee relations, environment, non-US operations, products, alcohol, tobacco, gambling, nuclear power and military contracting. The profiles also have social ratings evaluating each company’s strengths and concerns. Access to Socrates is limited to computers in the Johnson School and the School of Industrial & Labor Relations.

  • If you've used the CareerSearch database recently, you've noticed some dramatic changes! The interface has made certain types of searches more prominent and there are a number of new search options.

    Key features / changes are:
    1. more than two million companies/organizations are now included (compared to one million before)
    2. Canadian content has been added (160,000 companies/organizations)
    3. the new IT search shows which technologies a company uses

  • We have created an online tutorial that overviews how to use five key historical economic and historical data sources. Step-by-step instructions for using Datastream, EIU Country Reports, EIU Country Data, IFS Online, and WRDS are all included. A fuller tutorial with additional information is available at each of the computers in the Management Library (except for the four kiosks). [NOTE: The online tutorial must be viewed with Internet Explorer and it will open automatically in your browser. It may load slowly, depending on your Internet connection speed.]

  • The Factiva interface has changed! It has been simplified, and is generally easier to use. See our revised Factiva guide (in PDF format) to learn new tricks for searching this resource.

  • Using e-books just became easier! netLibrary, one of the Cornell University Library's main suppliers of e-books, has improved their interface. Pages now load more quickly and while you are reading any book online, you can easily search all of its pages. Among the most popular netLibrary titles are the Vault Guides to different careers and industries. To read Vault Guides online, search the library catalog for "vault" or do so on the netLibrary homepage.

  • To celebrate the Johnson School's "International Week", the Management Library has created an informative display that highlights useful resources for researching business in particular countries and world regions. Stop by the reference desk today to see! Also, see our answers to Frequently Asked international business questions. You might learn about a few new sources!

  • The Management Library's August acquisitions list of new books, journals, and databases is available.

  • Factiva's interface has changed significantly. See our Factiva Alert (150 kb PDF file) for suggested strategies for maximizing your Factiva searches.

  • Some computers are having difficulty dowloading spreadsheet financials from Thomson Research. On these machines, the financials are loading inside the browser window, rather than as a separate downloadable file. To downlad the file separately, follow these simple steps (for Windows):

    • Open My Computer and click Tools in the top menubar. Scoll to Folder Options and click the menu tab File Types. Scroll to XLS Microsoft Excel Worksheet and highlight. Click the Advanced button. In the Edit File Type box, select Confirm open after download. Uncheck any other choices. Click OK and close all windows.

September 2003

  • The Global Market Information Database has a new interface. This Euromonitor product provides statistics, market reports, historic and forecast data, and much more. The new interface makes it easier to perform cross-country comparisons and change search criteria.

  • The Management Library's July acquisitions list of new books, journals, and databases is available.

  • Find Databases and Find Articles replaces the e-Reference Collection. Cornell University Library has introduced a new system for discovering and connecting to the library's electronic resources. The new system, which allows for simultaneous searching of multiple databases as well as direct linking to articles, has three components: "Find Articles," "Find Databases," and "Find e-Journals." Use Find Articles to search more than one online database within a search session and to link directly from a citation to full text, when full text is available. Use Find Databases to access pproximately 1000 different reference resources including periodical indexes, catalogs, directories, dictionaries and encyclopedias. Use Find e-Journals to search the more than 20,000 electronic journals licensed by the Library. To use these three new services, go to the Cornell University Library Gateway.
  • ProQuest has a new interface. This popular article database has added new features including: a topic guide for honing on the best search terms, a sleeker main search page, and the ability to create bibliographies online.

July 2003

  • Mintel replaces MarketResearch.com! Mintel provides a more current and international selection of full-text market research reports. Mintel is available from the Top Business Databases pull-down menu on our home page. A Market Research guide, which has sample searches for Mintel, is also available.
  • Off-campus access to restricted library resources just got easier for the Cornell Community. You no longer need to configure your computer in order to gain remote access. Now you simply select your database from the Top Business Databases pull-down menu on our home page and enter your Cornell net id and password at the login prompt. Corporate firewalls continue to be problematic with the new system; details are available.

May 2003

  • The Management Library has a new look! We have updated the design of the Library's site to be more consistent with the Johnson School web design and have also used this opportunity to make it easier to access the information you need. Please let us know what you think by sending us feedback on the site.

  • Library Hours, including Reference Desk hours, have been posted for Summer 2003.

  • Due to popular demand, we've added a final Bloomberg - Fixed Income workshop to the schedule. This session will be held Monday, February 15th from 7-7:30pm in the Parker Center. Registration is required.

January 2003

  • FIS Online, an online corporate financial database to which the Management Library has subscribed, has been replaced by Mergent Online. In addition to retaining the original content and functionality of FIS Online, Mergent Online offers several new features, including enhanced historical financial data retrieval capabilities and company screening options.
  • If you missed the Bullseyes for Investment Banking & Brand Interview Prep, you can consult the outlines and handouts which are now online.
  • The Management Library's new book, journal, and database acquisitions for December have been posted.

  • The Management Library is offering two interview prep research workshops to immersion (and other) students who are in town right now preparing for interviews. Details for Investment Banking Interview Prep and Brand Interview Prep are available.
