Library Annex Expansion Project

The expanded Library Annex, located near the Apple Orchard on Palm Road, is now open. Since 1978, the Cornell Library (CUL) has operated the annex as a storage facility for lesser-used books, journals and archival materials. Because of the steady growth of the collection (equivalent to about 2.2 miles of shelving each year), and a decision by the Cornell trustees not to build new libraries on campus after 2000, the annex has been made bigger and better.

To relieve the overcrowding of the book stacks of the libraries on the Ithaca campus, the new high-density warehouse will house about one and a half million volumes in addition to the one million in the original annex. The new space includes an updated reading room, more parking, better staff work areas and a document delivery center. You can request material to be used at the annex, delivered to a campus library or, in some cases, sent to you electronically. The move of approximately one million volumes began May 27, 1998.
