Building Specifications


Location
Cornell University, Palm Road, Ithaca
The new construction wraps around the original Library Annex to the north and east.

Size
New warehouse: 10,000 gross square feet
New reading room and staff areas: 4,000 gross square feet
Original Annex staff areas (renovated): 2,800 square feet

Receiving areas
Exterior loading dock with dock leveler able to accommodate tractor trailers and a separate van garage with automatic roll-up door and loading dock

Shelving capacity
New warehouse: 1.4 to 1.6 million volume equivalents
Original Annex: 1 million volume equivalents

Materials
Warehouse: pre-cast concrete panels, R value 25; metal roof, R value 39
New staff areas: partitions constructed of metal studs and sheet rock

Floor
Warehouse: superflat concrete floor rated at a minimum of 100FF
Other areas: standard concrete slab

Security systems
Collection: 3 M book detection system, model 3801
Building: Omega Systems, Freeville, New York

Lighting
Warehouse: high pressure sodium
Other areas: indirect fluorescent

Sprinkler system
Warehouse: standard wet pipe system with standard sprinkler heads and high pressure sprinkler heads in the area designated for microfilm and microfiche

HVAC
Warehouse: constant volume with desiccant wheel for relative humidity control
New staff areas: variable air volume units

Temperature and humidity
Warehouse: 60 degrees F, 35% relative humidity
Original Annex storage area: 62-69 degrees F, 42-48% relative humidity
Other areas: office conditions

Vapor barrier
Warehouse Floor: The vapor seal, SealTight, manufactured by W.R. Meadows, is a pre-molded membrane with a plastic core installed below the concrete. It is both waterproof and vapor-proof and has a permeability rating of 0.
Warehouse Ceilings and Walls: vapor barrier made by Thermal Design is the Simple Saver-Plus system. Water vapor transmission rating is 0.02 grains per hour.

Welded steel uprights with steel shelves

Shelf size
Warehouse: Most shelves are 53.5 inches x 36.5 inches. The shelves near the ductwork are 40 inches x 36.5 inches. The space between shelves varies in size.
