- This guide contains a detailed chapter on anthropology (pp. 144-158)
by Joyce Ogburn. In addition to outlining the structure and nature of
anthropological literature, the chapter provides annotated lists with
concise descriptions of abstracts and indexes, dictionaries and
encyclopedias, reviews and current literature, the Human Relations
Area Files and online database resources.
- Kibbee, Josephine Z., Cultural Anthropology: A Guide to Reference and
Information Sources. Englewood, Colorado: Libraries Unlimited, 1991. OLIN Ref Z
5111 K46 1991
- The major, most comprehensive literature guide for general anthropology
with an emphasis on cultural anthropology. Provides citations and
informative annotations on reference sources, including handbooks and
manuals, bibliographies, indexes, databases, literature surveys and
reviews, catalogs, dissertations, book reviews, conference proceedings, and
employment and grant sources. Separate sections are focused on 12

cognitive and urban anthropology, archaeology, and anthropology of women,
among others. A separate chapter is devoted to anthropology and the
humanities, including sections on art and material culture,
ethnomusicology, folklore, and religion and mythology. Additional topics
covered are visual anthropology and research methods and fieldwork.
Kibbee's research guide can also be approached by area study; an extensive
chapter on resources is organized into 7 geographic sections. Information
is also provided about the HRAF, museums, archives, biography,
organizations and institutes, and significant journals in the field of
anthropology.
- Weeks, John M., Introduction to Library Research in Anthropology.

Chapters are included on specific subject bibliographies, regional
bibliographies, dictionaries, atlases, government documents,
manuscripts and archives, dissertations, biography, book reviews,
films, directories, Human Relations Area Files, and online databases. Coverage of cultural
anthropology is better in Kibbee's guide; descriptions of the field of

SPECIALIZED SUBJECT CATALOGS- Author and Subject Catalogues of the Tozzer Library [microform]: Formerly the Library of the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University. Second enlarged edition. Boston, Massachusetts: G. K. Hall, 1988. OLIN Ref Z 5134 H33 1988
- Contains a reproduction of the catalog of one of the largest collections on
anthropology and archaeology in the world. International in scope, including publications
from many countries, in several
languages. Particular strength in the Americas. In addition to books,
coverage includes articles in periodicals received by the library until
1983, festschriften, and conference proceedings. The catalog consists of 8
microfiche ring binders with a printed guide at the beginning of vol. 1.
Vols. 1-4 contain author and title entries, including editors, translators
and organizations as well as personal authors, and titles of journals,
books and volumes in monographic series. Vols. 4-8 contain the subject
index. Primary emphasis is on headings for ethnic groups, languages,
archaeological sites and specific topics such as primate species; secondary
emphasis is on geographical headings. Subject headings changed extensively
in the 1970's to reflect radical changes
in the field of anthropology. A complete list of headings is in the Tozzer Library Index to Anthropological Subject Headings, 2nd. rev. ed.,
1981 which is shelved before the Tozzer Catalog.

including books, journal articles, dissertations, unpublished
field reports and translations on selected cultures or
societies, both 'primitive' and contemporary, from all over the
world. The intention is eventually to represent all major
areas; currently many cultures are not covered. Subject access
is provided by an alpha-numeric coding system based primarily on
geographical area and cultural groups, subdivided by
cultural traits. (See Murdock's Outline of World
Cultures and Outline of Cultural Materials).
- Each document has been examined sentence by sentence and coded for information on cultural traits. Copies of relevant text segments appear under every relevant code in the file. If not available in the Library's general collections, the complete text of many documents is also available in the file for each cultural group under code #116. Bibliographic citations and abstracts of each document are under code #111.
- NOTE: The HRAF Index on microfiche, in the beginning of the file, is arranged by cultural trait codes; it indicates which cultural groups have information on each trait in the file, enabling HRAF to be approached, initially, by topic instead of by cultural group.
- Each document has been examined sentence by sentence and coded for information on cultural traits. Copies of relevant text segments appear under every relevant code in the file. If not available in the Library's general collections, the complete text of many documents is also available in the file for each cultural group under code #116.
