PRINTED WORKS
- The Dictionary of Art. New York : Grove, 1996. 34 volumes. Also available on the Web.
- (Fine Arts Ref N 31 .D55 1996; also Olin Reference)
The premier reference and background source on art from all eras and cultures.
- Eliade, Mircea, ed. The Encyclopedia of Religion. 16 vols. New York: MacMillan, 1987.
- (Uris Ref BL 31 E55+; also Olin Ref)
The first truly comprehensive encyclopedia for religious topics since the work of Hastings in 1908. Entries are alphabetically arranged. Essays are scholarly and accompanied by a selective annotated bibliography. Excellent coverage of both Western and Eastern religions.
- Encyclopedia of World Art. 16 vols. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1959-1987.
- (Fine Arts Ref N 31 E56; also Uris Ref)
The English translation (from Italian) of the most ambitious and authoritative reference work on art. It includes art of all periods, places and genres, with exhaustive studies of art forms, schools, cultures and related subjects such as aesthetics, psychology, and the lore of art. Though arranged alphabetically, it is essential to use the index volume, especially for biographical information, since many specific topics are included in the more general articles and may be scattered throughout several volumes. Another important point is that the plates (most of which were selected because they were hard to find elsewhere) make up approximately one half of each volume. Bibliographies at the end of most articles run to several pages in length.
- Gillispie, Charles Coulston, ed. Dictionary of Scientific Biography. 16 vols. New York:
- Scribner's, 1970-1980. (Uris Ref Q 141 D55+; also Olin Ref)
A major biographical reference source that is "designed to make available reliable information on the history of science through the medium of articles on the professional lives of scientists. All periods of science from classical antiquity to modern times are represented, with the exception that there are no articles on the careers of living persons." (Preface) Coverage is international, although individuals from China, India, and the Far East are not treated as extensively as others. The essays are signed, and usually include a bibliography.
- Hall, James. Dictionary of Subjects and Symbols in Art. Rev. ed. New York : Harper and Row, 1979.
- (Fine Arts Ref N 7560 .H17 1979)
- Hornblower, Simon, and Antony Spawforth, eds. Oxford Classical Dictionary. 3rd ed. Oxford: Clarendon, 1996.
- (Fine Arts Ref DE 5 0x2 1996; also Olin Ref + DE 5 098 1996).
A scholarly dictionary covering biography, literature, mythology, philosophy, religion, science, geography, etc. Most articles are brief. Bibliographies appended to the articles are usually limited to a few of the best works on the topic.

The catalog provides the call number, the name of the library, and the circulation status for most materials.
When to Check the Card Catalog
- When the book you want was published before 1973 and it's not in the Cornell Library Catalog, check the card catalog located in the John M. Olin Library.
