than the Encyclopedia of World Cultures, this set can only be used to gain a general
understanding of a country and its cultures. A unique feature is inclusion of
"do's" and "don'ts" for culture, such as appropriate topics
for "small talk". Brief discussion of ethnic relations is also included.
A valuable bibliography of additional sources to consult is provided at the end

Abstracts are grouped in four sections: archaeology, ethnology

articles and conference papers. The number of journals indexed increased in 1987,
resulting in 2 bound volumes per year. Coverage includes more medical and scientific
journals than other anthropological indexes. Author and subject indexes are included
in each quarterly issue, and then cumulated annually. The subject index is weak;
single, unqualified terms are used, followed by many entry numbers, resulting
in excessive searching to retrieve relevant material.

the user to find relevant material based on where a particular reference has been
cited. Using a key reference on a topic, other articles which have cited that
article are identified. The index can also be searched by authors and by keywords

In 1994 the HRAF files began to be produced electonically. While some of
the online resources reproduce information from the original microfiche files,
much of the material is new. It is published annually and is a full-text, fully-indexed
cultural database. It focuses on mostly pre-industrial cultures from around the
world, and on North American immigrant groups. eHRAF differs from other databases
because the documents (e.g. books, journal articles, dissertations) are indexed
at the paragraph-level with over 700 subject codes from the Outline of Cultural
Materials (OCM).

well as the development of anthropology, in many countries. Each of the 752 entries
is followed by a bibliography of major works by the person and a list of sources
consulted in writing the essay.

Although somewhat dated, this is still a useful guide to
