DEVELOPING A SEARCH STRATEGY

Search strategy is a library term for the process of finding information in a logical, step-by-step manner. Using a search strategy insures that you will find the information or material you need as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Research Steps:

1. Choose your topic
2. Find background information
3. Find books on your topic
4. Find periodical articles
5. Cite your sources

FINDING BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Encyclopedias and Dictionaries

---

The materials listed below are a selection of reference resources for finding background information and context for topics you will be covering in this class. Note the call numbers and library locations for these materials and check the reference collections for additional sources of background information.

The authors of articles in reference books often provide bibliographies of selected books and articles for further study.

Encyclopedias and Dictionaries

• Cayton, Marx Kupiec, ed. Encyclopedia of American Social History. 3 vols. New York: Scribner's, 1992.

  (Uris Ref HN 57 .E56 1992; also Olin Ref)

  This encyclopedia uses the scholarship of historians, sociologists, geographers and anthropologists to present a different view of American history. The 3-volume set is divided into 14 sections focusing on various aspects of American social history, including periods of social change, patterns of everyday life, family history and science, medicine and technology.

• Davies, David Michael. A Dictionary of Anthropology. London: Muller, 1972. (Uris Ref GN 11 D25)

  Brief definitions of terms relating to the study of man. Under the "anthropological umbrella" are included such sciences as Human Biology, Ecology, Sociology, Palaeobotany, and Palaeontology. Contains a short bibliography at the back of the book.

• Hunter, David E. and Phillip Whitten, eds. Encyclopedia of Anthropology. New York: Harper, 1976.

  (Uris Ref GN 11 E56; also Olin)

  More a dictionary than an encyclopedia, this work does contain some long, reasonably scholarly essays on topics relevant to anthropology; only the longer entries contain bibliographic references. Useful for the numerous photographs included.

• Levinson, David and Melvin Ember, eds. Encyclopedia of Cultural Anthropology. New York: Henry Holt, 1996.

  (Uris Ref GN 307 .E52x 1996)

  "This encyclopedia is a compendium of knowledge...relevant to cultural anthropology." The 340 articles contained in this four volume set cover all approaches, methods, concepts, and topics central to the study of cultural anthropology. Articles have bibliographies and the set has an index and an appendix of anthropological periodicals.

• Teirney, Helen, ed. Women's Studies Encyclopedia. 3 vols. New York: Greenwood, 1989-1991.

  (Uris Ref HQ 1115 .W875; also Olin Ref)

  Short articles provide basic definitions and information about a wide variety of women's studies topics. Articles incorporate recent feminist research. Most include a brief, representative bibliography. Volume 1 surveys the sciences, volume 2: literature, arts, and learning, volume 3: history, philosophy, and religion.

• Winick, Charles. Dictionary of Anthropology. New York: Philosophical Library, 1956.

  (Uris Ref GN 11 W77; also Olin)

  Definitions of varying length for English and frequently used foreign words and phrases common to the field of anthropology. Short biographical identifications of some well known figures are also included.

Help Using the Cornell Library Catalog

Access the Cornell Library Catalog

The Cornell Library Catalog currently includes all items from all Cornell libraries cataloged since 1973, some pre-1973 items, and items on order or in process. Included in the Cornell Library Catalog are books, periodicals and government documents, as well as some other materials located in the libraries at Cornell. The catalog provides the call number, the name of the library, and the circulation status for most materials.

When to Check the Card Catalog

When the book you want was published before 1973 and it's not in the Cornell Library Catalog, check the card catalog located in the John M. Olin Library. This card catalog contains cards for authors, subjects and titles filed in an alphabetical, word-by-word arrangement for books cataloged through December 1972. Whenever you cannot locate the material you need, ask at a reference desk for assistance.

FINDING PERIODICAL ARTICLES

Periodical Indexes and Abstracts

---

Periodical articles are an excellent source for detailed analysis of a topic. Articles in research journals will provide a very detailed account of a research project, study, or experiment.

Many indexes are directly linked to holdings in the library catalog. When using indexes and abstracts linked to the catalog, look for the message: Held by library--type HOL for holdings information. This note will appear in the lower lefthand corner of the screen in records where the Cornell Library has the journal or magazine listed as the source of the article. Typing HOL will take you to the Holdings information detailing what libraries on campus have the journal, what volumes they have, call numbers and special locations, and the circulation status of the material.

When using unlinked indexes, search the Cornell Library Catalog (CU) by the title of the periodical (i.e. Time, Scientific American, etc.). If you have questions, ask at the Reference Desk.

• Abstracts in Anthropology. Farmingdale: Boywood, 1970- .

  (Olin Ref Z 5112 A21+)

  Abstracts are grouped in four sections: archaeology, ethnology (or cultural anthropology), linguistics, and physical anthropology. Covers books, articles, and conference papers. Author and subject indexes are included in each quarterly issue, and then cumulated annually.

• Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland. Library. Anthropological Index to Current Periodicals. Vol 1- . London: Royal Anthropological Institute, 1963- .

  (Olin Ref Z 5112 R88)

  The Anthropological Index is a guide to articles appearing in anthropology journals located, until 1977, in the Royal Anthropological Institute and which now form a part of the periodical library of the Museum of Mankind. The Index contains citations to articles, arranged under one of six categories: General, Africa, America, Asian, East Indies, Oceania, Australia, and Europe. Coverage includes physical and cultural anthropology, human biology, archaeology, ethnology, linguistics and ethnomusicology and is international in scope.

• Tozzer Library. Peabody Museum. Anthropological Literature. Microform. Cambridge: Tozzer Library, 1979- .

  (Olin Ref Z 5112 A62 paper and fiche; also available on CD-ROM at Olin Ref)

  "The purpose is to provide a current index to anthropological articles that appear not only in serials, but also in books such as colloquia, festschriften, symposia, and collections of readings." The emphasis is on materials in English, French, German, Spanish and the Slavic languages. Entries are arranged within five main sections: cultural/social; archaeology; biological/physical; linguistics; and general/method/theory. Indexes offer access by joint author name, archaelogical site and culture, ethnic and linguistic group, and geographic location. Available from 1979 in paper; after 1982, in fiche.

• Anthropological Literature on Disc. New York: G.K. Hall & Co., 1994-.

  (Olin Ref CD-ROM)

  Anthropological Literature on Disc is the most comprehensive index for the field, containing references to English- and other European-language articles that appear in journals or edited collections held by the Tozzer Library at Harvard. Primary emphasis is on archaeology, anthropology (biological, physical, cultural, social) and linguistics. Book reviews, conference proceedings and reports are not included. Coverage begins with 1982. Earlier coverage of journal articles is provided by the Author and Subject Catalogues of the Tozzer Library... (see "specialized subject catalogs" section).

• Periodical Abstracts. Ann Arbor: UMI, 1986- . (Bear Access and Mann Gateway)

  Indexes and abstracts over 1600 general interest magazines and scholarly journals including all the magazines in Reader's Guide and most of the scholarly journals from Social Sciences Index, Humanities Index, General Science Index. It also includes citations and abstracts to selected television and radio programs. Cornell University Libraries subscribe to most of the periodicals indexed. Holdings can be found easily since the titles are linked to the online catalog. The full text of some transcripts from the television and radio programs can be found by searching the Transcript Files on the LEXIS/NEXIS terminals.

• PsycInfo. Washington: APA, 1984- .

  (Bear Access: Cornell Library Catalog Plus [under IND] and Web version)

  Indexes and abstracts 1,300 leading international journals in psychology and related behavioral disciplines including psychiatry, sociology, anthropology, education, and pharmacology. There are differences in scope and years covered for the electronic versions of this database. The online version available on Bear Access covers 1984 to the present and is updated monthly. The online version on the Mann Gateway [DIALOG] covers 1967 to the present and is also updated monthly. They both contain all the records from the print version Psychological Abstracts, available at Olin Ref (Z 7203 P973+), which began in 1927. The CD-ROM version contains journal articles from 1974 to the present and is updated quarterly. It does not include conference papers or dissertations. All versions of this abstracting service use the vocabulary and index terms from the Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms in Olin Reference (Z7203 P9731 1994+).

• Women Studies Abstracts. Rush: Rush, 1972- . Monthly. (Olin Ref Z 7962 .W87; also ILR)

  Women Studies Abstracts is the quarterly indexing and abstracting publication for women's studies. Article citations with abstracts are organized into these subject groupings: education and socialization; sex roles; employment; sexuality; family; society and government; mental and physical health; family planning, childbirth and abortion; media; interpersonal relations, and women's liberation movement. In addition to the subject arrangement, each issue is indexed. Annual indexes are published as well.
