BIOGRAPHICAL SOURCES
- Dictionary of Literary Biography. Detroit: Gale, 1978- . (Uris Ref PS 129 D55; earlier volumes also in Olin Ref; available online via the Library Gateway)
- An on-going set of volumes designed to provide biographic, bibliographic, and critical material on major writers of America and Great Britain as well as some writers of Canada, France and Germany. Each volume is arranged alphabetically by the writers covered. There are numerous portraits and often there are appendices containing special information. A list of further reading concludes each volume. An index to all volumes appears at the end of each latest volume.
- Dizionario Letterario Bompiani degli Autori de Tutti i Tempi e di Tutte le Letterature. 4 v. Milan: Bompiani, 1956-57. (Olin Ref PN 466 D62)
- A companion to the Dizionario Letterario Bompiani delle Opere e dei Personaggi di Tutti i Tempi e di Tutte le Letterature described above, this four-volume set contains biographical and critical sketches of nearly 9,000 authors from all periods and locales, with listings of primary -- but not secondary -- sources. Like its parent work, it is also profusely illustrated, covering art and music in addition to literature. There is also a French version, Dictionnaire Biographique des Auteurs. 2nd. ed., Paris: Societe d'Edition de Dictionnaires et Encyclopedies, 1964, (Olin Ref PN 466 D62+ 1964) which is slightly different in content.

- A quick pointer to biographical information on approximately 68,000 authors from antiquity to the present. Each entry provides brief biographical facts and then a reference to the one source judged to be the best place to begin a study of the author.
- Kunitz, Stanley I. and Howard Haycraft, eds. Twentieth Century Authors: A Biographical Dictionary of Modern Literature. New York: Wilson, 1942. 1st supplement, 1961. (Uris Ref PN 771 K96+ 1961; also Olin Ref)
- Biographical sketches of writers of all nations whose books are familiar to readers of English. Entries contain some bio-criticism and personal information supplied by the biographee. Brief bibliography of books by and about the author appended. Altogether, Twentieth Century Authors and its supplement contain information on 2,250 authors, most with accompanying portraits.
- Seymour-Smith, M. Who's Who in Twentieth-Century Literature. New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1976. (Uris Ref PN 451 S52; also Olin Ref)
- Brief descriptions of over 500 authors, including foreign as well as British and American authors. The first five entries, for example, refer to a Nigerian novelist, a Dutch poet, and a Hungarian poet and journalist as well as to two American writers. A short index lists the names of literary movements and of authors who have not been given a separate entry but who are mentioned in concession with those who have.

- Emphasis is on critical articles rather than reviews of productions. Includes parts of books as well as periodical articles.
- Baldensperger, Fernand and Warner P. Friederich. Bibliography of Comparative Literature. New York: Russell & Russell, 1960 [reprint; orig. pub. 1950]. (Olin Ref Z6514 C7 B17 1960)
- Though dated, this is an essential and wide-ranging bibliography covering literary influences across national boundaries (e.g., "English Influences upon Germany") and cultures from early to modern times. Sections cover generalities (themes, motifs, genres, etc.) as well as specific literatures and their contributions, listed by country or author exerting influence. Detailed table of contents, but no index. Continued by Yearbook of Comparative and General Literature, described below.
- Cambridge History of Literary Criticism. Cambridge ; New York : Cambridge University Press, 1989- Olin Ref PN 86 C17; also (Uris Ref PN 86 C17)
- A multi-volume work-in-progress covering the history of literary criticism from antiquity to the present. Each volume contains a sequence of signed essays on the major critical developments of the period, followed by a bibliography of primary and secondary sources. As of 1999, three volumes have been published: one on classical criticism, one on the eighteenth century, and one on the modern period of formalism through poststructuralism.
- Contemporary Literary Criticism: Excerpts from Criticism of the Works of Today's Novelists, Poets, Playwrights, and Other Creative Writers. Detroit: Gale, 1973- . Vol. 1- . (Uris Ref PN 771 C762; also available in part on the Library Gateway)
- Designed as an ongoing series of selective excerpts from critical writings (books and periodical articles) on contemporary authors. Writers treated are those who are either now living or who have died since January 1, 1960. In addition, consideration is given to writers of current interest and authors of mystery and science fiction writing. Full citations to the source follow the excerpts. Arrangement of each volume is alphabetical by author's surname. Index to authors covered in series is cumulated in each volume. Olin Library has volumes one through eighteen in the stacks.

- An international database providing references to scholarly articles from over 4000 journals dealing with languages, literature, folklore and linguistics. It is useful for finding literary criticism of a particular author or work, as well as articles on literary theory, women's studies, popular culture, and performing arts. All nations and periods (after 1450 A.D.) are covered.

- An annual publication consisting generally of shorter essays on varying themes of comparative literature. Each issue also has a number of reviews of current publications in the field of comparative literature. Indexed in American Humanities Index and MLA.
- Comparative Criticism. Cambridge: Cambridge UP, 1979-. (Olin Stacks P 14 851 C71)
- Each annual volume is divided into 3 parts. Part 1 consists of lengthy, scholarly articles containing extended notes on a particular theme (e.g., "National Myth and Literary Culture"), part 2 is translations and part 3 is essay-reviews. Included in each volume is a list of books and periodicals received and a couple of subject bibliographies. Indexed in MLA.

- Each quarterly issue contains four lengthy articles on scholarly aspects of compressive literature. Articles include a significant works cited list. A book review section is included. This periodical is indexed in Humanities Index and MLA.
- Comparative Literature Studies. College Park: University of Maryland, 1964-. (Olin Stacks PN 2 C73; current issues in Periodical Room)
- Another quarterly publication, containing 5 8 essays per issue. "It concentrates on literary history and criticism of all periods and lands" (Katz, Magazines for Librarians). Shelved with the periodical is an index covering V. 1-10 (1964-1973). It is also indexed in Humanities Index and MLA.

- A semiannual publication with a defined theme for each issue (e.g.,

- An annual publication covering a vast variety of articles about comparative literature worldwide. Includes scholarly articles of moderate length with notes ant works cited. Each volume concludes with a 'Bibliography on the Relations of Literature ant Other Arts." A section is dedicated to reviews of professional works. Indexed in American Humanities Index and MLA. It is a continuation of Baldensperger's Bibliography of Comparative Literature, described above.

- An annual publication which lists literary and linguistic research arranged by languages covered (mainly Western European languages). Although English and American language and literature are not included here, many of the articles on other languages are written in English. Indexed in British Humanities Index and MLA.

- According to its introduction, this work lists "3091 works by black African authors south of the Sahara writing in English, French and Portuguese. Reference material. critical works and anthologies are also included, as are children's books." The cut-off date for listings is 1981. The first four sections of this work are devoted to bibliographies, critical studies (both general and of specific authors), reference works and listings of folklore and oral tradition. These selections are followed by regional groupings (e.g. East Africa, English-speaking Africa, etc.) subdivided by country (e.g. Cameroon, etc.). Within each country individual authors are listed alphabetically, with their works listed chronologically. All entries are annotated and most contain both critical and biographical information.

- Over 500 biographical entries ranging from half-a-column to several pages. Basic bibliographies are provided for each author. Many useful appendices, listing authors by genre, for example, or by language employed. This is a useful reference source for anyone researching African literature.
- Parekh, Pushpa Naidu and Siga Fatima Jagne, eds. Postcolonial African Writers. A Bio-bibliographical Sourcebook. Westport, CT: Greenwood, 1998. (Olin Ref PL 8010 P585x 1998)
- Contains alphabetically arranged biographies and critical appraisals of more than 60 African writers who have come to prominence since the demise of European colonialism. Introductory essays provide historical and cultural context, and each signed biographical entry includes both a bibliography of the author's work and a substantial list of references to secondary sources in both books and journals. A selected bibliography at the end of the volume emphasizes sources on postcolonial theory and gender issues in postcolonial society.

- This set contains a selection of criticism of works by major black writers. Including poets, essayists, autobiographers, novelists and more. The entries include introductions to the author and extensive excerpts from the selected criticism. The set also includes an author index, nationality index, and a title index.

- Although the majority of the writers included here are from the U.S. there are a number of African authors represented. Articles consist of short, critical essays, generally taken from a longer work, such as a periodical article. Alphabetical arrangement.

- Complements the earlier edition (see above) with additional writers from Africa, the Caribbean and the U.S. Contains entries for 125 authors (43 women, 82 men), including 27 updated entries for writers covered in the previous edition. - This handbook "brings together a large selection of criticism about modern Arab writers." (Preface) It includes the "most important" authors and works in the 20th century Arabic literature. The critical wrings were culled from a larger collection of critical works on each author. An index to critics and a "Works mentioned" section are included at the back of the book.

- Signed articles arranged alphabetically discuss major Indian authors writing in 22 languages, their works, literary styles and terminology. Bibliographic references included. Indexed.
- Kodansha Encyclopedia of Japan. 9 vols. Tokyo: Kodansha, 1983. Plus suppl. 1986. (Uris Ref DS 805 K76+; also Kroch Asia Ref)
- Represents a ten-year effort by Japanese and foreign scholars to compile the "first comprehensive encyclopedia" about Japan in English. Over 9,000 entries (the vast majority under 500 words) are contained in this eight-volume encyclopedia. A one-volume index completes the set. Coverage includes philosophy, history, science, politics, economics, literature and the arts, food and clothing from both a historical and a contemporary perspective. Authors were asked to introduce the topic at a level appropriate to high school students with no familiarity with the subject and to expand to a level for advanced students. A letter-by- letter system of alphabetization is used and the romanization system is Hepburn or Standard. Although bibliographies are appended to most of the longer articles, the encyclopedia would have been more useful with additional English citations. The encyclopedia is illustrated with black and white photos, charts and maps. It should be the single most useful source on Japan for the non-Japanese reader.

Most chapters cover historical background, main trends in the literature and individual writers; a bibliography completes each chapter, and a detailed index enhances the complete volume.

- Covers "the most important authors, works, genres, key terms and issues in Arabic literary tradition -- classical, transitional, and modern" (Intro.) and consists of concise, signed entries arranged alphabetically, most listing references for further reading. Cross-referenced. Appendices include a glossary, chronological tables, and an Arabic to English transliteration table.

- Covers Chinese literature to 1911, and contains more than 500 signed entries, some of considerable length, on authors, works, and literary schools. Each includes a bibliography of editions, translations, and criticism. Indexed by name, title, and subject. General bibliography and chronology also provided.

- Each of the three volumes of this set focuses on literatures from a particular region of the Orient East Asia, covering the literatures of China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, and Tibet; South and South-East Asia, covering the literatures of India, Pakistan, Bangaladesh, Ceylon, Nepal and the countries of South-East Asia; and West Asia and North Africa, covering the ancient literatures of Mesopotamia and Egypt and all the countries of Western Asia and Maghreb. The literature of Black Africa has been omitted as beyond the scope of the publication. There is no index, but a list of national Literatures followed by their respective major works appears at the end of each volume.

- A guide to major works of Japanese Literature which have been translated into English. It is intended as a "rough road map for the uninitiated" for identifying both the classical and modern masterpieces of Japanese Literature, including novels, poetry and drama. Each entry gives a brief outline of the work, sets it in the context of the time it was written and provides information on the availability of translations.

- Serves as both a guide to the CU Library collection and subject guide to other online resources. Contains links to sites in Arabic literature, Persian literature, and Turkish literature.

- Some 500 scholars have contributed short essays to this new edition of the Columbia Dictionary. Over 1800 authors from throughout the Western world are treated, giving biographical as well as bibliographical information. Most entries contain references to further critical or biographical readings.

- "Designed to encourage the reading of Russian literature" (Preface), each volume in this set is divided into two parts: Part 1, the Plots; and Part II, the characters and other personages. Volume one covers Pushkin, Lermontov, Turgenev and Tolstoi; Volume two covers Gogol, Goncharov, Dostoyevski.

- Brief but informative entries cover not only outstanding literary authors but also non-literary authors whose works have stimulated the literary climate of Europe. The time span is from the 10th century onward, and coverage includes writers of smaller communities not often treated in other works. Tit Titles of English translations are included where necessary.
- Lord, Robert Russian Literature: An lntroduction. 2nd ed. London: Kahn and Averill, 1980. (Olin Stacks PG 2951 L86 1980)
- This handbook is divided into four parts. Part 1 is "The Russian Writer in Context," part 2 is Poetry, part 3 Prose, and part 4 Theatre. Included is a selected bibliography and an index to individual authors. Not much biography is provided, but rather a discussion of particular authors' style, technique and contribution to Russian literature.

- Another in Ungar's Library of Literary Criticism series, the two volumes of Modem Slavic Literatures provide critical studies on nearly 70 Russian authors and more than twice that many writers from the other Slavic countries. For each author there are excerpts of criticism on specific works, extracted from both books and journal articles. All excerpts are in English. Although concerned mainly with the works of each author, many entries contain some biographical information as well.

- An annotated bibliography covering those authors and works receiving the greatest critical attention and publication since 1945. Divided into sections covering: Bibliography; Dictionaries; History and Criticism; Anthologies. Within each section there is a further division by countries and genres (poetry, prose fiction, drama). The anthology section is useful for locating works that may be difficult to as separately published volumes. An author index provides access to all sections.
