Volume 1 contains Fundamental Documents covering major themes, and Volume 2-5 contain documents which are organized by constitutional article, section, and clause, or by amendment. [1.8.8, no. 12; or Amend. I (religion), no.66] Each document or excerpt includes a bibliography citing related primary material. Each volume has its own Table of Contents (with each chapter starting with a detailed list of contents), a list of Short Titles Used, an Index of Constitutional Provisions, a Table of Cases, and an Index of Authors and Documents. (In addition, volumes 2-5 also contain the full text of the U.S. Constitution and the first twelve amendments.)

This two-volume bibliography includes citations to some 8,000 books, pamphlets, journal articles, films, and other material relating to freedom of the press in English speaking countries, from the beginning of printing to 1977. "Press" is used generically to include books, pamphlets, periodicals, newspapers, motion pictures, phonograph records, radio, television, and to a limited extent, stage plays. There are numerous citations to articles and books concerned with specific legal decisions affecting free speech. Arrangement is alphabetical by main entry. A comprehensive subject index identifies topics, concepts, countries, individuals, court decisions, and titles of censored works.

Includes some writers not French by nationality, but who "have written in French and are identified with French culture." (Preface) A separate chapter is devoted to the many women troubadors of the 12th and 13th centuries. Coverage for each writer includes biographical information, a discussion of literary achievements and major themes, and a brief survey of critical reaction. Extensive bibliographies include primary works, translations into English and critical studies. There are title and subject indexes and two appendices: "Situating Women Writers in French History: A Chronology", and "List of Authors by Date of Birth".
