In 1994 HRAF files began to be distributed on CD-ROM. While some of the files reproduce, in electronic format, information from the original microfiche files, much of the material is new. The CD-ROM files provide the advantages of a windows-based dynamic table of contents format (DYNAText), full-text searching and hypertext links. The Outline of Cultural Materials and the Outline of World Cultures are fully integrated.

HRAF. Ann Arbor, Mich.: University Microfilms International, 1975 - 1995. (Olin Ref Microforms Microfiche set 887)

A collection on microfiche of primary source materials, including books, journal articles, dissertations, unpublished field reports and translations on selected cultures or societies, both 'primitive' and contemporary, from all over the world. The intention is eventually to represent all major areas; currently many cultures are not covered. Subject access is provided by an alpha-numeric coding system based primarily on geographical area and cultural groups, subdivided by cultural traits. (See Murdock's Outline of World Cultures and Outline of Cultural Materials).

Each document has been examined sentence by sentence and coded for information on cultural traits. Copies of relevant text segments appear under every relevant code in the file. If not available in the Library's general collections, the complete text of many documents is also available in the file for each cultural group under code #116. Bibliographic citations and abstracts of each document are under code #111.

NOTE: The HRAF Index on microfiche, in the beginning of the file, is arranged by cultural trait codes; it indicates which cultural groups have information on each trait in the file, enabling HRAF to be approached, initially, by topic instead of by cultural group.
