This guide is divided into three sections: 1) a general introduction including information on the history, geography, literature, art, and economy of Peru; 2) detailed descriptions of cities and regions; and, 3) a traveler's advisor or practical information section. The general introduction is very informative and includes a bibliography of both English and Spanish titles for further reading. The practical information section is less useful as the telephone numbers and addressed it contains are at least 12 years old.

An additional aid in using this publication is the short section in the front entitled "Definitions and Classifications Underlying the National Income and Product Account" which provides clear and concise explanations of terminology.

This is a good, current bibliography of book-length studies of Native Americans. All entries are annotated, some extensively. The arrangement is by very broad subject area (general studies, history) and then by culture area. Within the culture area entries are arranged by more specific subjects such as archaeology, folklore, tribal life, biography, etc. The arrangement makes for a valuable, easy to use book. The index is perfunctory, however, so plan on spending some time thumbing through the sections looking for appropriate resources.

This is really a biographical dictionary which sketches the lives of the great and not-so-great participants in the world of jazz from its beginnings to the late 1950s. The opening essays by Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, and John Hammond as well as the author's introductory chapters on the history and chronology of jazz serve as excellent background material on the subject. At the end of the volume are lists of polls taken in America and abroad, musicians' birthdays and birthplaces, jazz organizations, schools and booking agencies, and a bibliography of books and periodicals on the subject. All of this material has been updated by Leonard Feather's Encyclopedia of Jazz in the Sixties (Uris Ref ML 3561 J4 F281+) and the Encyclopedia of Jazz in the Seventies which Feather wrote along with Ira Gitler (Uris Ref ML 105 F28+). The semi-monthly subject index to the New York Times is cumulated annually. The Times Index is also useful in locating material in other newspapers because it gives a clue to the date of an event. Brief synopses of articles answer some questions without having to go to the paper itself. Citations include date, page, and column number. Its arrangement and subject headings are unique, and frequently difficult to use. You can use this index to follow the course of particular events through its pages. Narrow topics are often cross-referenced to an article under a broader topic.

This work is comparable to the Dictionary of American Biography in that it covers deceased persons only (i.e. women who died after 1950 were not included, no matter how famous). Entries are followed by a bibliography of works by and about the biographee. Women included here are those "who have attained distinction in their own right in work that took them before the public" These volumes contain some 1700 entries compared with DAB's 700 women entries, most of whom were wives of notable men. The long introductory essay by Janet Wilson James provides a broad overview of the sociological and historical position of women in America. The 1980 supplement adds some 442 women (all of whom died after 1950) to the set.
