Although designed for international students, it is also helpful for U.S. students looking for schools with an international program. This resource indexes over 3,000 scientific journals, meetings, and anthologies per year in three ways: the Source Index lists articles by author; the Citation Index enumerates sources which have mentioned or cited a given article; the Permuterm Subject Index indexes articles according to every combination of two significant keywords used in the title. For example, numerous articles can be found using the word "OBESITY" with "DIET", "PREVENTION" or "TREATMENT", or by using the term "WEIGHT-REDUCTION" with "OBESE" or "PROGRAM". This twice-yearly publication abstracts books, dissertations and articles in the field of second language acquisition. Topics covered include child language acquisition, bilingual education and translation. SLIA is an offshoot of LLBA and uses LLBA's thesaurus and reproduces some of LLBA's abstracts. Articles are selectively abstracted from around fifty specialized journals with some relevant articles from general linguistics journals. There is representative coverage of major European languages. For those involved in any aspect of second language acquisition this is a valuable snapshot of the literature in the field. The works are organized by major geographic areas, divided into regional and country sections that in turn are subdivided by subject. Each has an author and title, but no subject index.

A comprehensive bibliography up to 1976, covering the "legal, medical, economic, and social aspects of sex discrimination." No subject index but a clear table of contents makes it relatively easy to use. More than half the entries appear to be annotated, although most annotations are very brief.

A useful handbook including nearly 3,000 entries on all facets of Shakespeare's life. For each play there is an act-by-act, scene-by-scene synopsis, a commentary, and the theatrical history of the play. There are also entries for individual characters both historical and fictional, major character types, major Shakespeare scholars and performers, and the people who influenced Shakespeare. A suggested reading section and an appendix list entries by broad categories.

Covering over 2,000 journals in the social sciences (some selectively), SSCI is a web based databases of bibliographic information, indexed to be searched by subject, author, journal, and/or author address. SSCI can also be searched for articles that cite a known author or work. Cited reference searching allows use of a given work as if it were a subject term, to identify more recent articles on the same topic. The print version allows for similar searching, in one of three component sections (Source Index, Citation Index, and Permuterm Subject Index). Divided into six major sections, the source book includes characteristics of the criminal justice systems, public attitudes toward crime and criminal justice related topics, nature and distribution of known offenses, characteristics and distribution of persons arrested, judicial processing of defendants, and persons under correctional supervision. Much of the data comes from the FBI's Uniform Crime Reports and the Bureau of Justice Statistics' Prisoners in State and Federal Institutions. However, some of the data have been taken from previously untabulated data, so that some of the tables are not available elsewhere. The subject index at the end of the volume is very helpful. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy promises much more: signed articles by experts, continuous updating, bibliographies with articles, extensive cross-referencing, etc. At this time, however, very few articles have actually been written. Those that have been are superior to the Internet Encyclopedia. See, for example s.v. "prisoner's dilemma." When completed, this might well challenge the print sources.

Although the first set of tables in this annual compilation deals with population, area and density, the overwhelming majority of tables summarize information about education, culture and the media. Typical of the tables included are Education--summary tables for all levels of education by continent, major area and groups of countries; Science and Technology--including scientific and technical manpower, expenditure on research and experimental development, selected indicators of scientific and technical development, etc; Culture and Communication--summary tables for culture and communication subjects by continents, major areas and groups of countries; Printed Material--libraries, book production, newspapers and other periodicals; Theatre and other Dramatic Arts; Film and Cinema; and Broadcasting.

There is no index to the Yearbook so that the Table of Contents is extremely important in helping to find the statistical tables needed. There are a number of appendices as well as a list of UNESCO publications. All information is given in English, French, and Spanish, and each set of tables ends with a set of explanatory notes.

Statistical Yearbook, plus information published by trade associations and societies.

A review of the leading international strategic and military topics of the year. Arrangement is geographical with topical essays for each region. For instance, the 1983/84 volume has an article on the Falklands/Malvinas conflict in the section on Latin America, and for East Asia there is an article on the new defense thinking in Japan.

The final category, "Bibliographies" includes "Aging," "Birth Control and Contraception," "Rape," "Sex Roles," among others. The volume concludes with author, title and subject indexes.

This volume opens with an excellent introductory essay, describing the world of English translation as it relates to Japanese literature. A table of contents lays out the arrangement of the volume and a comprehensive subject index at the back provide easy access to individual citations. Included are both books and articles.

Now published six times per year, Studies on Women Abstracts began as a quarterly publication in 1983. There are author and keyword indexes at the end of each issue, providing access to the numerically arranged abstracts taken from approximately 60 journals. The last issue of each year contains the cumulative indexes for the year. Note that more than half of the journals indexed are published in the United Kingdom.

National entries include the academic year and general information in addition to program listings; program listings include addresses, eligibility, duration of courses, costs and deadlines. Probably the most comprehensive coverage of academic programs in the foreign study guides group. Uris has most recent edition.
