A massive work drawing information from major Russian reference sources, both historical and contemporary, as well as from standard monographs, articles and other writings. Bibliographic references have been supplemented with important English-language titles. Supplementary volumes 46 - 55 cover topics omitted in the main sequence, especially material on cities and towns, and biographies of individuals deceased since publication of earlier volumes. Volumes 56 - 58 are indexes by entries and authors; topics; time period.

Rhyne, George N. Supplement to the Modern Encyclopedia of Russian, Soviet and Eurasian History. Gulf Breeze: Academic International, 1995 - . (Olin Reference DK14 M68 Suppl.) An ongoing supplement to the above, arranged alphabetically by topic, with the purpose of including recent subjects as well as updating older entries with newly available sources. The set has been retitled since volume 56 as Modern Encyclopedia of Russian, Soviet and Eurasian History [SMERSH] to reflect fuller treatment of non-Russian areas and cultures.

Kodansha Encyclopedia of Japan. 9 vols. Tokyo: Kodansha, 1983. Plus suppl. 1986. (Uris Reference and Kroch Asia Reference DS 805 K76+) Over 9,000 entries (the vast majority under 500 words) are contained in this eight-volume encyclopedia. A one-volume index completes the set.

It contains signed articles by specialists and excellent bibliographies. The scope includes noteworthy inhabitants of the British Isles and the Colonies. Still not very good on its coverage of women.

British biographical archive: a one-alphabet cumulation of 324 of the most important English-language biographical reference works originally published between 1601 and 1929. London: K. G. Saur, 1984. 1236 microfiches. (Olin lower level microtexts) Reproduces in one alphabetical sequence entries from some 320 biographical sources other than the Dictionary of National Biography. Indexed by British biographical index (Olin Reference +CT773 .B86 1998). Useful both as an index to the microfiche and as independent resource, providing dates, occupations, and citations to both printed sources and the microfiche set.

Dictionnaire de biographie française. Paris: Letouzey et Ané, 1933-92. (In progress.) (Olin Reference +CT 143.D55) An important dictionary of national biography, unfortunately still incomplete (to date up to L). More convenient to use, but not nearly as extensive as the microfiche set above.

Mitchell, Brian R. International Historical Statistics: Europe, 1750-1993. 4th rev. ed. London: Macmillan Reference Ltd., 1998. (Olin Reference HA 1107 M5x 1998; older edition in Uris Reference HA 1107 M68 1981) Official and unofficial statistical sources were used to provide comparative data for the 26 European countries (including Russia) treated. Arranged into 11 sections: climate; population and vital statistics; labor force; agriculture; industry; external trade; transportation and communication; finance; prices; education; and national accounts. Check list in the front of the volume for official sources consulted.

Statistical Abstract of the United States. Washington: Bureau of the Census, 1878- . Print volumes available in Olin and Uris Libraries. Latest volume in Reference. Also available in most other libraries. (HA 202) (Also available online through the Library Gateway's Databases) The standard annual summary of statistics on the social, political and economic organization of the United States. It is designed to serve as a convenient volume for statistical reference and is a guide to other statistical publications and sources.

Oxford English dictionary [computer file]. Oxford, UK : Oxford University Press, [2000]- (Library Gateway's Databases also in print at Olin and Uris Reference PE1625 .M98 1989) The OED presents in alphabetical series the words that have formed the English vocabulary from the time of the earliest records down to the present day, with all the relevant facts concerning their form, sense-history, pronunciation, and etymology.

The key to effective searching is awareness of the Library of Congress subject headings. They are nation-state-centric and period-centric. Terms are generally plural. Any given topic will have many overlapping subject headings.

Center for Research Libraries Catalog. Chicago : Center for Research Libraries, [19uu?-] The CRL is a consortium of research libraries. It has "most favored interlibrary loan lender" status at Cornell which means that items found there can often be borrowed quickly. CRL has a few unique strengths, including a large collection of foreign doctoral dissertations.

More than 600,000 are available full text online. Items not available full text online can generally be interlibrary loaned.

Royal Historical Society bibliography (Online) Oxford University Press. Database contains 300,000 records on British and Irish history, including relations with the empire and Commonwealth. The Russian Academy of Sciences Bibliographies. Mountain View, Calif. : Research Libraries Group, [1999]. The Russian Academy of Sciences Bibliographies covers the social sciences and humanities with topics ranging from archaeology, economics, history, law, linguistics, literary criticism, philosophy, political science, religious studies, and much more. ATLA Religion Database. American Theological Society. (Library Gateway's Find Databases) A comprehensive database that contains citations from international titles and multi-author works in and related to the field of religion. It also includes a full range of index citations to journal articles, essays in multi-author works, book reviews, and Doctor of Ministry projects from ATLA's print indexes: Religion index one (RIO), Religion index two (RIT), and: Index to book reviews in religion (IBRR).

The Philosopher's Index (Library Gateway's Find Databases)
Provides indexing and abstracts from books and many journals on philosophy and related interdisciplinary fields published in the U.S. and the Western World. Coverage is from 1940 to the present for U.S. materials, and 1967 to the present for non-U.S. references.

Sociological Abstracts. Wellesley Hills: Silver Platter, 1974- . Indexes and abstracts the world's leading journals in sociology. It covers articles published since 1974. There is extensive coverage of sociolinguistics.

Anthropology Plus. [Mountain View, Calif.] : The Research Libraries Group, Inc., 1993-. Anthropology Plus provides worldwide indexing of journal articles, reports, commentaries, edited works, and obituaries in the fields of social, cultural, physical, biological, and linguistic anthropology, ethnology, archaeology, folklore, material culture, and interdisciplinary studies. The index offers coverage of all core periodicals in the field in addition to local and lesser-known journals. Coverage is from the late 19th century to the present.

This site includes course materials, the beginnings of a systematic and searchable bibliography, and links to many on-line resources, including articles, book reviews, databases, and images.

Index of Christian art (ICA database). [Princeton, N.J.] : Princeton University, Dept. of Art and archaeology, [1998] Begun in 1917, ICA is an invaluable thematic/iconographic index to medieval works of art before 1400 AD. The term Christian art is broadly construed and is not restricted to art produced within ecclesiastical contexts or theological in theme. Contains all of the works electronically indexed by the archive since 1991 when computerization started. Can be challenging to use. A couple of tips: In a list of hits, to see the record for a specific item, click on the number to the far left. To see an image, when available, go to the record and click on the link in the image field.

ARTstor Searchable database of digital images and associated catalog data. Covers the fields of architecture, painting, sculpture, photography, decorative arts, and design, as well asmany other forms of visual culture.

SOUTHEAST ASIA VISIONS is a digital collection of European travel accounts of pre-modern (1613 - 1920s) Southeast Asia from Cornell University Library's John M. Echol's collection many of which are housed in the Asia Rare collection. The collection Web site provides contextual information as well as access to full text and image descriptions for more than 350 books and journal articles written in English and French and 10,000 images, drawings, photographs, prints and maps, many of them in color.

American Memory: Historical Collections for the National Digital Library Washington, DC: Library of Congress, National Digital Library Program, 1994-. Provides information on, and access to, the digitized version of the Library's primary-source collections on American history and culture, including photographs, documents, sound recordings, and motion pictures.

The Map Collection located in the Lower Level of Olin Library.
The Map Collection contains over 232,000 maps, 3000 books and atlases and 400 CD-ROMs. The collection is geographically comprehensive and supports the teaching, research and study needs of the entire Cornell University community.

Kroch Rare and Manuscript Collections
The Rare and Manuscript Division is located in an underground addition attached to Olin Library. It houses manuscripts from a variety of periods and several special collections including the History of Science Collection and the French Revolution collection. It also supports such electronic collections as the image collection of European Renaissance Art: UTOPIA.

The Electronic Text Center. Located on the first floor of Olin Library, the ETC is a laboratory for the use of full-text primary sources in electronic form (such as CD-ROM). The ETC provides access to the library's electronic texts for scholarly textual analysis and editing from a set of dedicated workstations. British History Online is the digital library containing some of the core printed primary and secondary sources for the medieval and modern history of the British Isles. Created by the Institute of Historical Research and the History of Parliament Trust, we aim to support academic and personal users around the world in their learning, teaching and research. Guide to full text of pre-1800 Imprints, British and American at Cornell

ARTFL Full-text online of nearly 2000 French texts, ranging from classic works of French literature to various kinds of non-fiction prose and technical writing. The eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries are about equally represented, with a smaller selection of seventeenth century texts as well as some medieval and Renaissance texts.

Gallica Bibliotheque Nationale de France. Includes many digitized collections of primary sources originally published in the 19th century such as the multi-volume Recueil des historiens des croisades. Use the [challenging] Gallica catalog to find the fulltext.

AccuNet/AP Multimedia Archive. [State College, Pa.] : Accuweather, Inc., c1999-. The Photo Archive is an on-line database containing almost a half-million of Associated Press's current and historical images for the last 150 years. It features state, regional and national photos from North America, as well as international photos.

Readers' guide retrospective. [Bronx, N.Y.] : H.W. Wilson Co., c1997- A database containing comprehensive indexing of the most popular general-interest periodicals published in the United States. The complete database covers the years 1890 through 1982.

Chronicling America is sponsored jointly by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress as part of the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP).

Full-text and full-image articles from the New York Times (1851-2003), the Wall Street Journal (1889-1989), the Washington Post (1877-1990), every page from every issue in PDF files.

America's Historical Newspapers, 1690-1876 (formerly Early American Newspapers. [Chester, Vt.?] : Readex, [2004?]- Web-based archive of Americana that features images and full-text content from many historical newspapers.

Paper of record. [Ottawa, Ont.] : Cold North Wind, [200u]- Paper of Record is an historical archive of full-page newspaper images dating from the 1700's. Based on a pre-existing microfilm collection, the online text preserves the original format of the paper, but can sometimes be of poor quality. (Better quality could be interlibrary loaned if necessary.) Included are newspapers from Australia, Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom and United States of America. Many of these titles date from the early 1800s to the mid 1900s.

Poole's Plus: Indices to Nineteenth-Century Newspapers, Periodicals, Books and Government Documents [Reston, VA] : Paratext, Inc., 2000. A continually expanding resource for the study of 19th century cultural and intellectual life.

FIND ARCHIVAL MATERIAL

Increasingly archives are providing websites with basic information and contacts if not guides to and catalogs of their collections. Major archives and repositories generally publish guides in print which often can be found through a keyword search (using the name of the archive) in the CU catalog, Worldcat, or RLIN.

Selected print and online guides:

ArchivesUSA [Alexandria, VA] : Chadwyck-Healy, Inc. Provides information about primary source materials from nearly 4,500 manuscript repositories in the United States. It includes records, with indexes, for approximately 100,000 manuscript and other collections. It brings together information from NUCMC, or the National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections (found in print at Olin and the National Inventory of Documentary Sources (NIDS). It also updates and supersedes the Directory of Archives and Manuscript Repositories in the United States (DAMRUS), last published in 1988.

ArchiveGrid Open the Door to History. [Mountain View, Calif. : Research Libraries Group]
Includes a searchable database for catalog records for archival collections and items, and full-text guides to specific collections. Sources are RLG members and nonmember contributors.

Directory of archives and manuscript repositories. United States. National Historical Publications and Records Commission. Washington : National Historical Publications and Records Commission, 1988. (Olin Reference CD3020 .U58 1978 +) A useful guide for addresses and brief descriptions of the strengths of collections. Arranged geographically by city within states. Has been superseded by ArchivesUSA.

This is the National Archives of the United States. The print versions are Guide to the National Archives of the United States and The Archives: A Guide to the National Archives Field Branches. Since NARA administers the Presidential Libraries, it includes links to their electronic finding aids on this site.

Finding Internet Resources

Search engines (such as the highly rated Google) or Internet subject guides for the World Wide Web can be useful resources. A search engine is software that allows you to search the contents of web pages and a subject guide is a web page that uses menus and lists to sort and classify web sites. Be cautious with material and information found on the web. Evaluating Web Sites is a helpful guide to using web resources.

JAKE. JAKE ("jointly administered knowledge environment"). A favorite of librarians, JAKE allows you to identify journal titles, where they are indexed, and which vendors make them available in full-text.

Internet History Sourcebook Project Collections of sources for ancient, medieval, modern, etc. history. A convenient way to find the classic sources of a period. Be wary. "Editions" and translations contributed by volunteers can be outdated and error-ridden.

The Voice of the Shuttle covers all periods of history. Digitized video collections were recently added.

RefWorks is a web-based program that allows you to easily collect, manage, and organize bibliographic references by interfacing with databases. EndNote allows you to build your own database of bibliographic references from a variety of resources, including library catalogs and periodical indexes.
