Downloading records from the International Medieval Bibliography (online):
1. For best results in searching IMB, use Internet Explorer.
2. Before you begin searching IMB, click on settings. Choose all fields except the first (IMB reference). At Cornell, the settings won't be retained so you'll need to do this each time you use IMB.
3. From the search results (hitlist) screen, mark records you want (default is all records marked; to unmark all the records, click the box at the top of the column of boxes, next to author).
4. Click the "here" link at the top of the hitlist/results screen (in the line that says "To scroll through the selected documents click here.")
5. Under file in the browser's tool bar, choose save as.
6. Name the file (and save it to the desktop for convenience's sake or some other place that you'll be able to find later).
7. For "save as type" choose txt file. (Leave encoding as Western European.)
8. Open the text file, and at the beginning of each record, insert a field/line called type. (Records are of two types either journal article or book section. Punctuation and capitalization of the field/line must be exactly as below.) Label each and every record accordingly.
Tips: Typically you'll need have the text file closed for the filter to work. If you open the text file into a word processor (rather than a text editor like Notepad), you'll be able to see the spaces and other characters which will help, and you'll be able to create macros so that you don't have type or copy/paste the type info.
Occasionally IMB inserts an extra return inside records, delete these when you encounter them. Sometimes international characters get garbled and you might want to fix those.
When you're finished, your records should look like this (note the indent of 6 spaces IMB added before each field):
