PRINT RESOURCES
- Champagne, Duane, ed. The Native North American Almanac: Reference
Work on Native North Americans in the United States and Canada.
Detroit: Gale Research, 1994.
(Olin Ref E 76 .2 N28 1994; also Mann) - In 17 chapters written by various scholars of Native American studies,
the Almanac covers the range of Native American history and culture in the
United States and Canada. It provides a chronology, demographic and
distribution descriptions and histories, and discussions of religion, the
arts, history, economy and law. The final chapter is comprised of
biographical essays on significant historical and present-day Native North
Americans.
- Handbook of North American Indians. Gen. Ed. William C.
Strutevant. 20 vols. (in progress) Washington: Smithsonian, 1978- .
(Uris Ref E 77 H23+; also Olin) - Planned as a 20-volume encyclopedic study of the prehistory, history
and cultures of the aboriginal peoples of North America, this new handbook
is an on-going project of the Smithsonian Institution. At present only
Volume 5 (Arctic), Volume 6 (Subarctic), Volume 8 (California), Volumes 9
and 10 (The Southwest), Volume 11 (The Great Basin), and Volume 15 (The
Northeast) are complete and in print. A wonderful reference tool, its
information is scholarly, but clearly written, bibliographies are
extensive, and there are numerous photographs, charts, maps, and tables.
- Moquin, Wayne, comp. Great Documents in American Indian History.
New York: Praeger, 1973.
(Uris Ref E 77.2 M82) - Speeches, testimony given before various government agencies, stories
and legends, letters, treaties and constitutions comprise the body of this
volume. There are, in addition, some photographs, a short bibliography, a
glossary of tribes (very incomplete) and an index of proper names. Although
the volume does cover many useful documents it is disappointingly short on
some of the most important so that it is essential to consult additional
sources for the full picture of American Indian documentation.
- Native Americans Information Directory. Detroit: Gale Research
Inc., 1993- .
(Olin E77 N275+; also Mann) - Provides directory information for a wide variety of organizations,
agencies, institutions, programs, publications, services, and other
resources concerned with native peoples of the United States and Canada. It
is divided into five sections: 1) American Indians, 2) Alaska Natives, 3)
Aboriginal Canadians, 4) Native Hawaiians, and 5) General Resources.
- Prucha, Francis Paul. Atlas of American Indian Affairs. Lincoln:
University of Nebraska, 1990.
(Olin Ref E77 P97) - An atlas depicting the relationships of Native peoples with the U.S.
government. Sections of maps include culture and tribal areas, U.S. Census
enumeration of American Indians, Indian Land Cessions, Indian Reservations,
the Army and the Indian Frontier, and others.
- Prucha, Francis Paul. A Bibliographical Guide to the History of
Indian-White Relations in the United States. 2 vols. Chicago:
University of Chicago, 1977, plus suppl. 1982.
(Olin Ref Z 1209 .2 U5 P97) - This major bibliography is designed to provide access to articles and
books which deal with the relationships between American Indians, and
American non-Indians, including the U.S. government. Arrangement is in
chapters, and then by further subdivision (e.g. Revolutionary War, Teacher
Training), and finally alphabetically by author within the subdivision. A
name and subject index at the end of each volume is a further aid to
access. Uris has the supplement only.
- Reddy, Marlita A., ed. Statistical Record of Native North
Americans. Detroit: Gale, 1993.
(Olin Ref E90 P76 S73x 1993; also Mann) - A compilation of statistical data on the indigenous population of North
America (Introduction). It includes statistical data on Native North
Americans compared with other ethnic groups, as well as data comparing
native tribes with one another. Data
on history, demographics, the family, education, health and health care,
social and economic conditions, and other topics are included.
CD-ROM RESOURCES
- Bibliography of Native North Americans on Disc. Santa Barbara:
ABC-CLIO, 1992- .
(Olin Ref Disk Z5114 B58) - One of the most extensive bibliographies on Native Americans, with an
easy, powerful search interface. Use keywords to locate relevant articles,
then try using the database's own subject descriptors. For example: search
on the keyword "storytelling" (about 20 citations). Examining the results
shows that the database uses "verbal-arts" as the subject descriptor.
Searching that descriptor results in 2,000 citations.
- Ethnic NewsWatch. Stamford: Softline Information, 1992- .
Monthly.
(CD-ROM at Uris Ref) - This is a multi-cultural database containing the full-text of articles,
columns, and editorials from 125 ethnic and minority American newspapers
and news magazines. It includes African-American, Arab-American,
Asian-American, Eastern European, European, Hispanic/Chicano/Latino,
Jewish, and Native American publications. Spanish-language newspapers
are in Spanish; the database is searchable in English and Spanish. Local,
national, and international business, economic, political, and social
issues are covered in addition to entertainment, fashion and music
topics.
