Finding Periodical Articles:

Periodical indexes identify and locate articles in magazines, journals and newspapers. Periodical indexes provide the authors, titles, and sometimes abstracts, of relevant articles, along with the name of the periodical, volume, pages and date. Some online periodical indexes also provide the full-text of the article. When full-text articles are not provided, use the Cornell Library Catalog to determine which library owns the periodicals you need.

Sample citation from a periodical index -- Language and Linguistics Behavior Abstracts (LLBA):

This is a citation from LLBA for an article titled "Among the New Words", written by John and Adele Algeo and published in the Journal American Speech, volume 65, issue 4 (winter) 1990 on pages 367-376.

Open the Library Catalog, and do a journal title search for American Speech:

It's not uncommon to retrieve more than one result in the list of titles. Look closely at the records to determine which one to choose. (Note dates of coverage and match the volume and year listed in your citation, with the dates published)

It looks like we have two records for this journal -- a print version, here in the library stacks, and an online version. Open the records to determine if we have the year/volume you need.

Here's the record for the print version. Look closely at the holdings to be sure that we have the volume you need. Note the location and call number to find the journal in the library stacks. In the record below, you can see that we do have 1990, volume 65.

Consult the Olin Library stack guide (in print or online) to determine where the PE call numbers are shelved. There are 3 size sections for each call number range in Olin. Oversize books include 2 pluses with the call number (++), the next size down has one plus (+) with the call number, the regular size books do not have a plus sign with the call number.. The call number above has no pluses, so it will be shelved in the regular-size section.

For this journal, we also have an online version. Look closely at the dates of coverage and choose the link that includes 1990.
